Be careful with doing the coding, make sure to do a backup. Not all the units have sfd protection so it should be possible to code those units.

Might be worth an email to support@obdeleven.com and ask them if there is a bug with OBD11 on reading all control units on MQB EVO platform.

I have certainly seen others saying its an issue with OBD11 Seeing all control units

VCDS Scans can certainly see

05-Acc/Start Auth

D6-Light Ctrl Left 2

D7-Light Ctrl Right 2

as I say I have OBD11 Scans from a Golf 8 and that certainly shows the 4b Unit

I will also rais it with support and see if we get an answer.

Just spotted your reply, I think he is confused, Yes you cant code SFD Impacted control units but you should be able to read them.

I did not get a reply so will chase again in the morning, its a bug they should be able to read all control units as i understand it.

My understanding based on one document is that the benefit of SFD is that the interface will tell VW Head office you are making a change.
Its not clear yet if that is just a change request or obd11 sends a specific detail of the changes and if that is limited to SFD Stuff only.
We will all be asking OBD11 When they go live as a lot of people will want to know about the warranty impact of changes.

At this stage its not connected but we dont yet have any evidence from the real world if VW have some trickery up there sleeve to double check when a car goes into dealer (i am trying very hard not to be a conspiracy person)

I tried on Configuration of displayable contents to activate the display of engine power and torque but it asks for a code, I tried 47115 but it doesn't work

So i found that it is possible to also configure the logo in the AID display like these:

so always in 17-Dashboard/ Adaptions go to Logo menu and select one of the logo items:
- kein_logo for no logo
- Logo_1 = Golf R
- Logo_2 = Golf R different logo style
- Logo_3 = Golf GTE
- Logo_4 = Golf GTI
- Logo_5 = Golf GTD
- Logo_6 = Golf GTD no honeycomb background

Only Logo_1 works with the Golf R View (View 9)
All logos work with the GT View (View 8)

Static security codes are superseded by SFD. In the Background there is a signature algorithm. CUs have at least one public key (should be readable, but has no worth). When unlocking SFD, VW is generating a signed message, containing all data for the CU to decide if the SFD lock should be openend and when the lock should be enabled again (time, mileage, never). For this, you will need the private key, which is carefully kept by VW.

So when a control unit is unlocked by SFD, there is no security access needed.

But:

* With the introduction of OCU and FoD (feature on demand) there is a way to check, verify and to change coding over the air. This is entirely theoretically and includes some tin-foil, but entirely possible.
* Control units will save some information about all coding and adaptions changes: There are easily readable values for date and time and the workshop id of the last coding/adaption.
* Also, VW is able to quickly read (much quicker than we can!) all codings and adaptions from all control units.
The last two points are nothing new and are valid for all MQB cars. So far, I have not seen warranties being declined because of careful coding. Of course, when messing up the software yourself, you will be out of warranty. And you should be adult enough to admit you f*ked up at the workshop.

How the API is actually made for 3rd party vendors we can only guess. But we should not overestimate that. With SFD there is a lot of differenciation in access levels possible, so OBD11 users might not get their hands on some parameters after all.

We already have the possibility to track back changes the way we would with SFD. After all, every control unit will record the last Date/Time of Coding (Time comes from GPS, so no easy tampering) and all authorized ODIS-Codings are played back to VWs servers, obviously with a timestamp. So any mismtach is easily found.

A 3rd party supplier for retrofits is actually now announcing the following procedure:
1. build in hardware
2. Go to SFD, let them do the SFD unlock with odis
3. Plug in supplied coding dongle -> done

So SFD is not tied to diagnosing hardware at all, when the unlock has been done, you are free to go with any equipment as you like.

Claims: I can only speak for Germany. Here the workshop or dealer is billing against VW for warranty work. They are in close contact when it comes to software errors to make sure they are following VWs guidelines and get their work and equipment paid by the factory. So it is up to VW to deny warranty - and they clearly can check for coding right now.
