What can this do with a mk4 that a cheap generic scanner cannot? The apps do not work, and it does not provide any more information regarding faults than a generic scanner. And now I am reading that throttle body adaptation does not work either.....

You are incorrect in all your statements above. It is true that the MK4 didn't come with CANBUS where all the good "options" are available, but that is a limitation of your car, not OBDeleven. OBDeleven gives specific error codes and does "output" tests that a generic scanner cannot do. The APPS are not tailored to YOUR specific MK4 configuration due to the vast variety of markets (unlike MK5 and never that uses CANBUS and started standardizing things). The TBA didn't work before, but it does work now (I tested it with a R32 here in Jamaica). OBDeleven is a good investment for your car, just don't use the APPS function and code the options yourself. The Ross-Tech Wiki will help you. It is a good instruction manual.
