I am unable to activate the Enable Traffic Information (TMC) on my Headunit. The OBD11 cannot access the Control Unit 5F (Information Electrical) section at all so I can change the values. I suspect that my car which is a MY2015 R , has a retrofitted MIB1 headunit which as far as I know was properly coded when installed, and going by some of the information in this thread here the retrofitted MIB unit has to be registered in the "installation list" in the Gateway module etc. If that is indeed the case, will a VCDS cable be able to do the job, or does my MIB unit has to be registered no matter what? |

limestoner - my apology for not posting up the instructions in my first reply I've shown the process in the picture below: - Press the scan button on the first screen and wait for the process to finish.
- Then press the envelope symbol in the second screen. This should invoke the native email app(s) on your tablet/mobile phone.
- Select an email app and send yourself an email. This then gets you a digital copy of your scan report - which you can cut-and-paste on a post here

Here's a copy of a previous post that I wrote to explain what I mean about "color": ^^^ Just as a further comment for those reading this who might not be aware - the programmers @ OBD11 have kindly embedded a facility in their software where the "Control Units screen" tells the user the state of each module's registration in the Gateway list. Here's an example of the "Control Units screen" from my test-bench that demonstrates this facility (the screenshot was taken with the old OBD11 software, but it's the same in the current release):  For the purpose of this example, I registered the Engine module (@ address hex01) in the Gateway list (using my instructions in my previous post above), but I disconnected the CAN high wire from the module (so that the Engine module couldn't talk to the Gateway module). Notice the colors in the "hex address" circle in the upper right-side of each module. The OBD11 protocols are as follows: - Black colored circle means that the module has been added to the Gateway list, but it hasn't responded when polled (likely because the module isn't actually installed in the car)
- Red colored circle means that the module is correctly registered in the Gateway list, but the module has reported Trouble codes when polled
- Green colored circle (not shown in my pic) means that the module is correctly registered in the Gateway list and no Trouble codes have been reported

Ok, the car was purchased recently from the original owner, who at some point retrofitted the MIB1 unit and the 8 inch screen. A VW dealer installed it but I'm not certain wether they or an agent of Euro Car Upgrades did the coding etc.
Everything works eg the interface with the multi function display. Aside from the inability to activate the Traffic the only anomalies are the FM radio station and presets being saved when the car is next used, and an inability to update the maps in the usual manner (had to use the service menu which worked for an early 2018 update, but when applying a further update effective April , the unit would not update again. I'm fairly certain my head unit firmware is not the most current, and I plan on getting a VW dealer to check that when I have my first service. According to the service book, all previous services were at a VW dealer.
All of the above may not be directly relevant, but might provide some insight/clues.
All the modules that you have listed are black.

^^^^ OK - so my suspicion (and it's purely a guess) is that the new MIB unit has been hacked to avoid Component Protection error. If the car was mine, I would start be removing the modules from the Gateway list that I'm certain are not installed in the vehicle (i.e central electric 2, 56 Radio). If your car doesn't have DYNAUDIO (i.e. a digital sound system module fitted under the driver's seat and the sub-woffer in the boot well) try also removing 47 Sound System.
Ordinarily, it is important to retain 5F Information Control Unit in the CAN Gateway installation list, but the fact that it isn't responding suggest that the CP error hack is somehow responsible for the non-response from this module (but I'm guessing)

Hi dv52,
I rescanned after leaving out those modules out. The report is below. I left the radio is as I do have a radio.
I'm still unable to access the 5F module as it is still black. From my limited understanding of Volkswagen electronics I would agree that the MIB1 unit has been hacked to avoid component protection. Is there any way to successfully install legitimately acquired hardware?
Anyway, given the result, can the TMC be activated with the VCDS or some other method, or do I just have to live with what I have?

^^^ Again, I'm guessing but the way that Component Protection is normally hacked is by altering the firmware within the MIB unit. Both OBD11 and VCDS can't access module firmware, so I suspect that you would get the same result with both devices. A VCP cable can be used to access firmware, but unless you know the specific changes that were implemented in the firmware, it would be unlikely to be a useful exercise. You could buy a non-hacked MIB unit and then get a dealer to legitimately delete Component Protection (by using FAZIT), but it's an expensive way of activating TMC!

Jest letting people know I was eventually able to getting into the Control Unit 5F module by going in the infotainment unit's Service Menu, then the Green Engineering menu, disabling DAB and enable diagnostics for next 3 reboots.
I was then able to activate TMC.

I also have a co hacked mib2 unit and have no TMC. When you were able to get in where was the TMC enable and what was it called?

Hi Microbe, Once the unit rebooted I just followed the standard process with the OBD11: Select Control Unit 5F (Information Electrical) Then went to Adaptations Change Fee Based Traffic Information (TMC) value to ‘1024’ After turning the radio on, I went to the FM band radio settings, enabled ‘Traffic Programme (TP)’ and RDS, and I was receiving traffic info in seconds  |

I'm in the UK so 1024 didn't work for me but I found an old post by DV52 and it listed some codes for various regions and the last one worked!

These are the TMC codes of which I am aware: - 65535 - TMC OFF
- 1024 - SUNA Traffic (Intelematics)
- 0 - dev options
32771 online traffic + VW TMCPro 1573 - USA, Canada 1023 - Some European countries 32768 - Some European countries

Hey guys, Bumping an old thread here - I'm currently trying to resolve a similar issue with my MIB2 unit, which currently shows a strike through the TMC icon across the top of the display.  I've worked through all the codes listed above (I've found it really hard to come by any info on how to do this, I didn't see this until after I posted my own thread) however, they didn't work. Does anyone know which long-coding bytes and adaptations have to be enabled in conjunction with this, in order for it to work correctly? For reference, I'm based in the UK and thought I read somewhere that this system was switched off, but that doesn't make any sense to me because there must still be thousands of sat nav reliant on this, which all pre-date cars with "connected" services in them? Can anyone throw any ideas at me which are worth looking into? |
