Is it possible to have the gear you are in show up on the dash when you are in "D" or "S" as it does when you are in manual?

I never heard of a way to do this with VCDS/obdeleven. I always thought the only way to get this was through something like APR's DSG tune

^^^^^ 100% correct - the facility for displaying the gear number (which our RoW models can do) is resident in the firmware for the auto trans control module (@ address hex02). Alas it's not a selectable item through OBD protocols!
