Hello,
I own a 2017 golf wolfsburg with the 1.8TSI and I find I don't like the electric steering. I have test driven other cars, the altima and civic come to mind, and the steering felt way over boosted at low speeds, 5-10mph. The golf feels fine at these speeds. I have come to understand VW is using dampeners to give the steering a more natural feel with some feedback. I think this is why the golf feels much more natural at low speeds. But I find these dampeners aren't scaling back enough as the car picks up speed. The car to me feels like it doesn't want to move left or right, it feels bloated to me. I think the car handles just fine, but the steering is getting in the way and making it feel like it doesn't. In my opinion at least. I had a 2000 golf with a torsion beam rear end, but with really dialed in hydraulic steering and that car was amazing. This car hasn't lived up to my old one sadly. But maybe I can fix that.
Does the OBD11 and the MK7 have the capacity to dial down the steering dampeners and make the steering lighter? Or does the car only have the ability to make the steering heavier?
thx,
-Jason

I think it can under the steering module, pretty sure there was a setting in there to make the steering lighter for the disabled driver, but you sure you haven’t got active lane guidance enabled?

My car only has front collision warning and blink spot alert. It doesn't have any lane assistance.
I will look into the disabled driver feature. Thanks!

Re read the original topic and it kinda says there another steering damper for disabled, and reading on the web it seems changing the settings in module 44 resets after switching the ignition on and off again,
That’s with the module with the option in the adaptions, steering assistance 100%

Just so I understand, if I change steering settings they will reset when I turn the car off and on again correct? Also, if I lower the steering assistance from 100% to a lower value will that make the steering lighter? Or would it be heavier?

From what I read on the newer modules it seems to reset on switch on, and I didn’t read too much into it after that, but from the old thread I was talking about they seemed to have a old module which was done by changing the long coding, so maybe if your long coding is 6 digits (as in 11221) then your steering is changeable but if you have 4 digits it’s in the adaptions and resets

^^^^ The Steering Assistance module @ address hex44 has 2 x adaptation channels that allow the user to "modify" the degree of assistance provided to steering. These are: Support power > default value = 1 Characteristic curve of steering assistance > default value (on my mk7) = Driving profile selection button
The first channel is by far the most effective at changing the "feel" of the wheel (the lower the number the less assistance is provided) - but as OP says, the change is only effective for the current ignition cycle. The number will revert back to 1 the next time the ignition is turned-on.
The second channel provides a permanent change, but the allowable values are automatic/dynamic/comfort (from memory - I think). So, the effect of altering this channel is the same as selecting the driver mode, but the setting is applied (for steering only) regardless of the mode set by the button.
Hope this makes sense!!

Don Hi Don, Would you happen to know how automatic works? Is there any way to change the profile on the MIB1 without having to retrofit the profile switch. David

Don Don, what if my car doesn't have a selectable drive mode? I can put the car in regular 'D' or 'S' for sport, but that's it. I have a regular Golf and not the GTI which as I understand has three driver modes. -Jason

Old post but same question - from my testing with my base Golf Sportwagen (no driver selection modes), my Atlas (has driver selection modes) and a buddy's Alltrack (has driver selection modes) changing mine to "dynamic" doesn't do a thing. I think you need the modes to have this do anything. Only can change it through the one that resets each key cycle.

tigeo: hmm......... sounds logical!! Drive mode is SWAP (SoftWare As Product) - so folk need to throw money at VW to get the advantages that this facility provides. Given this, seems antithetical to then allow these same advantages (at least in part) to be available to anyone via a simple change to code!! Don
