hey everyone, first post here so sry if this has been already answered. I am in the process of getting ready to install a 5 channel amp to add a sub and also to add a little more juice to my factory speakers. I have been reading around the web tonight that you can reprogram the factory head unit to change the output signal on the speaker outputs to a low level pre-amp style signal with either vag-com or the obdeleven. does anyone know for sure that the obdeleven would allow my head unit that re-program feature? I have the sound system without the subwoofer(ie non fender) sound system. I believe it is referred to as the composition media mib2.
thanks for any info you can provide before i decide to buy this cool sounding little unit.

Jay: As far as I know, switching for external amplifiers on MIB unit happens in Byte 11 of the module @ address hex5F (the module in the glove-box. The native VW external amplifier that VW uses is the "DYNAUDIO Excite" which is a 400 Watt, 10 x channel system (8 x speakers + 2 x coil subwoofer). In the OEM arrangement, the pre-amp signal is digitized and it is sent to the amplifier (called "J525", or "Digital sound package control unit") via an optical fiber ring cable. This pre-amp signal uses MOST 150 (Media Oriented Systems Transport operating @ 150 MBit/s)) protocol. MOST is a serial bus system for transmitting audio, video, speech and data signals. So, back to your question - here is the options available in Byte 11: I've identified the software switch for enabling MOST - but I assume that you are referring to one of the other options on the last screen, I have never used these software switches for a third party amplifier. Perhaps someone else here can comment. Don

Don, my understanding with the base mib2 system I have is that the amp in base system comes out of the CD player and does not have the sub channel. Here is an example of a guy putting in a similar amp that I am going to use Do you feel that the Obdeleven will allow me to do what I asked about above? Ps here is the wiring harness I will be using. Without the converter as the amp will handle the high level conversion if need be. enfigcarstereo.com/ENFIG_AAI4_VW12.html

The video shows the "normal" high level signal tap from the speaker cables - it doesn't show a pre-amp tap directly from the quad connector. If you are intending to use the high-level tap, then OBD11 shouldn't be needed at all.
If you intend to use a pre-amp tap, then I suggest that you experiment with different options on my Byte 11 screenshot.

PS: if you do experiment, please share your observations here

Thanks don. So your don’t think you can change the signal on the high level speaker leads?
could you explain more about the other leads you are referring too and where I would find them? Thank you for all this help

^^^^jay: What I'm suggesting is that you experiment with the settings on Byte_11_Sound_System in my screen shot above.
I know that if you wanted enable "Pre-amp" signals on the optical fiber connections at the rear of the MIB unit, you need to have the setting Sound_System_external_MOST. But I'm not sure what the other settings do. For example Sound_System_external_Booster seems interesting as does the other "external" settings that I have shown on the screen shot.
I suggest that you experiment with ALL the external settings on my screen shot - maybe one of them will give you pre-amp signals on the speaker leads ?

With the the system set to "Sound_System_external_BOOSTER" the frequency response is ruler flat all the way up to 16kHz where there is a slight roll-off. So I can confidently say that if you're installing a DSP, this is how you want your head unit setup.
