Hi team,

Strange error popped up last week on my wifes 2017 GTI.

The dashboard error is Error: Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFS). No biggie I thought, normally a blown side bulb. However on inspection both bulbs are working fine. I also noticed while driving it that the lane tracking had switched itself off, and when trying to turn it back on showed an error with lane assist, and ACC.

The full scan is below, and I am a little bit confused what to make of it because none of ther errors seem AFS related. There are a couple of generic data bus errors, and the one that seems most alarming is the error under A5 Driver Assistance.

So I am left with a couple of questions;
1. Are the scanned codes responsible for the AFS dashboard error (I assume - but it seems a strange error to throw for those faults)
2. What can cause the 'C1106F0 - Dynamic calibration
' error? Searching suggests camera calibration. The camera hasn't been touched, this fault has popped up randomly.

hmmm............interesting car! What country is this? The words in your post suggest that English is your first language - but the SCAN details suggest that this vehicle was built for the Japanese market!

Accepting that anything is possible when interpreting SCAN reports and that conducting remote diagnostics on a forum like this is far from ideal - my hunch is that the cause for your problems is the loss of initialization data on the A5 Driver assistance module. This module is called R242 in VW's wiring diagrams and it is the front-facing camera that's glued to the windshield (behind the rear-view mirror).

As you might have guessed, R242 is fundamentally involved in lots of the car's driver assistance functions - like: Adaptive Lane departure warning (Lane Assist), Traffic sign recognition, Dynamic Light Assist (DLA), Main Beam Assist (FLA) and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC).

When this car was built, the R242 module was taken from VW's store-room stock and installed into the vehicle. The module was fully self-contained to operate ALL of the assist system that I mention above - but because each car on the production-line contained its-own unique variations, the camera underwent a calibration procedure. This initialization procedure for the camera calibration produced data for both a "Static" test and for a "Dynamic" test, and the results were stored into the A5 module memory.

The errors in your SCAN strongly suggest that for some reason, the A5 module has lost the camera initialization data for the "Dynamic" part of calibration. I'm not sure why this has happened - but it does happen!!

Because R242 is a pivotal part of the car's assist-system and because many of these system have safety implications - I suggest that re-establishing the lost calibration data be done by a professional workshop (meaning a dealer in most instances)

PS: The AFS connection to the front-facing camera is logical! Think about how the front lighting operates on a car with this level of sophisticated version of headlight equipment. The front facing camera is used (in addition to other assist systems) to monitor oncoming vehicles for the purpose of High-beam assist and the camera detects curves in the road for Dynamic Light Assist. If the camera fails because it has lost calibration, it's logical that AFS errors will arise!

My conclusion was some sort of error with the camera as well. The question is why or what would cause that.

Frustratingly, I think that is going to be a very expensive repair! I believe recalibration can be around $1000 - let alone if the module needs replacing.

I have free windscreen cover.... It would be tempting to get an 'unfortunate' stone chip which necessitates a windshield replacement and camera calibration..... hmmmmmm

!! As for your very good question - I don't know and I suspect neither does anyone else! As I said, "it does happen" and the usual fix is to re-establish the calibration parameters - not to fault-find the cause!

I'm not sure of dealer costs across the ditch - but here in Australia, the normal charge-out rate for a master-tech's time is $250/hr AUD. We will both agree that this fee is outrageous - but I can't imagine that the re-calibration exercise takes 4 x hours!!

As for your concern about module replacement, of course anything is possible! However, the error-message in your SCAN does NOT indicate a faulty module!

huh- "free windscreen cover"? New information -this is obviously non-OEM equipment!! I have absolutely no idea how (or, if) a "free windscreen cover" affects the operation of the front facing camera - but it clearly (pun intended) is part of the operational environment for the front facing camera that was never contemplated in the original design!
