Hi, so I got the 8.5 two months ago and I tried to connect my obdeleven but it wouldn't let me unless I enter the VIN. After this, I did a simple scan and got 12 gateway faults. I went back to the VW dealership and they're unable to connect to the car even with their own equipment. They're trying to blame me for this issue and basically saying I've locked the system by simply plugging in the obdeleven. They're even saying my warranty is now void because I'm not a mechanic and I plugged in an obd. I read the whole term and conditions and I don't see anything about this, only says I can't connect a device that can edit or manipulate the mileage. Are they trying to con me?

I presume you are talking about VW Terms and Conditions.
My previous experience of warranty being void has been when users have made coding changes which you have not.
However the grey area is that it appears using a simple OBD Device can lock down control units which as you are using a VAG Authorised application would seem to me to be a VAG Issue to fix and not impact your warranty but they will also blame OBD11 for bad coding and OBD11 basically don't warranty you car in any way.
But it very much depends on the country and the garage as to how awkward they will be.

Did you get any update on this? I have also just got a Mk 8.5 Golf, and also just got an OBDeleven when I found this thread. I'm cautious to even plug it in if it's causing issues.

No update yet, the dealership blame me for the issue and I'm taking it to different dealership.

sal44: If my understanding of the words in your original post is correct - the ONLY OBD11 task was a SCAN. SCAN reports only read module values - they do NOT change coding! If I'm correct in my understanding above and if the dealer cannot connect to the Gateway module with their ODIS tool - then the most likely cause will be a bent/damaged pin in the car's OBD port. I suggest that you grab a torch and eyeball the state of the pins in the OBD port. If you find a bent pin and you can't straighten it - then I suspect that you are accountable for its replacement. My local mechanic connected his obd to the car but got the same result as me, only able to scan the gateway which shows 12 random gateway faults that are very non specific. I will just leave it for now until it's time for the first service. A different VW dealership checked the car and found no issues, don't know if they tried connecting to the car or not but I'm not going to worry about it for now.

hi, for my experience. in my country vw provide online service for 24' car. however, they plug a device which provide online service to OBD port. the device will cause connection problem to other OBD reader. just for your reference.
