I recently tried to adapt a BCM from a FL 2024 into a 2021 Golf 8. I got a preety nasty suprise that dataset upload to only some memory addresses (i my case for AMBI lights) failed. Reason is that VW requires SFD2 release tokens to unlock writing to these specific addresses. It is impossible to have SFD2 released for a part that is not factory fitted to the car (or if the new part is not an approved part number change). Reason is that the SFD2 token is actually a 2-part key - the tokens (and checksums) on the specific unit(s) must match the exact copy stored on VW servers....
So, although I have a proper dataset, dealership level diagnostic access to ODIS and a valid SWaP, I am unable to retrofit the new BCM in the car. Everything except AMBI lights works though. It is interesting that only writing to specific addresses was locked... As AMBI has nothing to do with safety, I assume SFD2 was introduced to further lock down retrofit of features VW makes a lot of money of. So please beware, SFD2 might ruin your day. I am currently unsure what units (except the 09) are partially or fully protected by SFD2...
In my case, only option to have the part retrofitted is to find a car that has the unit from factory, then hook my BCM to that car and perform software adaptation using SVM (on that car). The adapted unit then can be returned to my car.

Brand new. You cannot adapt a used one at all due to component protection.

This is unlikely that connecting OBD11 would cause any permanent damage. A faulty OBD scanner, damaged pins on the scanner tool or OBD plug or blown fuse could all be reasons why you cannot comunicate with the car. Also, make sure the bonnet is popped. Check simple things first... If you fail to find the issue, you can try disconnecting the battery and leaving it disconnected for some time (cca 15 minutes). This will reset everything and you should be able to connect to the car again. Note that you will get a lot of errors after reconecting the battery. This is normal. Just start the car, turn the steering wheel to both end positions and enjoy the error lightshow for some time. After some time all errors should clear.
