Hi,
I had my anti theft alarm sensor replaced last week by a local garage. This week I got OBDEleven to troubleshoot a GPS issue (now fixed), but noticed the following two static errors. I've tried clearing, but they return immediately.

Does this mean there's a problem with the installation? Or does the new unit need coding to the car somehow? Any advice gratefully received.

Mike: Hi. Hmm......... my first thought after reading your words and seeing the "Data record invalid" error-message in your part-SCAN was maybe the garage did not replace like-with-like? However, I note that the following Freeze-frame data for the errors:
- Date/time stamp= 2024-09-10 18:44
- Malfunction frequency counter =1
The first point above is the date/time that these errors were first registered in the module fault memory and the second point above means that since first registration, the same fault has NOT re-occurred in a subsequent drive-cycle (which is a defined term roughly equating to a reasonable drive distance)
Clearly the date of the error message is NOT consistent with your words "I had my anti theft alarm sensor replaced last week by a local garage".
So, assuming that you did NOT clear errors with OBD11 before creating the SCAN - this ain't a problem with the type of replaced module!
What happened to this car on 2024-09-10 @ about 18:44 hrs? Were you "troubleshooting a GPS issue" -I have no idea what this means ?

Hi Don. I had indeed cleared errors before this scan.
The timeline is:
6th: Garage replaced sensor
10th: I purchased OBDEleven, did a number of scans and cleared errors to see which had been resolved and which still remained. This extract is from a later scan. The sensor errors have been present on every scan since I got the scanner. Looking at the history in the app, there is no timestamp against errors on the initial scan. I didn't have a subscription then, so maybe not captured as part of the free usage?
Regarding the troubleshooting the GPS - the connection to the shark fin has been damaged, so I was testing out a replacement GPS aerial. Part of that was clearing the GPS open circuit and short circuit errors on the 5F unit, and looking at the GPS live data to see how the replacement was performing. Don't think there's any connection to the alarm sensor, except that the damage was initially caused during the same attempted theft!
From what i'm gathering elsewhere on similar "data record invalid" errors, some units need flashing with details for your car, and won't work until that is done. My theory is that needs doing for the alarm sensor, and the local garage I used didn't know or don't have the tools to do it. I will probably take it up with the dealership when it's next due a service to see if they can sort it.

Mike: OK - your latest information changes stuff dramatically!!
I suspect that your words about "flashing" refer to what's called the "module dataset" - which indeed tailors the module operation to the particular vehicle brand/model. Maybe you are correct - I'm not sure! However, here's the thing about the anti-theft module on MQB platform cars (like this Golf): it does NOT have full registration on the CAN (Controller Area Network) bus - in fact it's NOT a CAN module at all!! Instead, the anti-theft module uses LIN (Local Interconnected Network) communication - which is a low-speed, single wire protocol. The anti-theft module is one of multiple LIN-slaves to the LiN -master facility on the central electrics module. In OBD11 speak, this LIN arrangement is called a "Subsystem".
The central electrics module (i.e. the LIN-master) DOES have full CAN registration and it also has a module dataset.
I wasn't aware that LIN slave-modules have module datasets!!
As I say, I'm not sure about the module dataset fix - but I have to ask: was an anti-theft module installed into this car when built? If not - did the "local garage" tell the central electrics module that an anti-theft module was retrofitted via coding changes?
In the alternative that this car was fitted with an anti-theft module when it rolled-off the factory assembly-line - did the "local garage" replace the module like-with-like (meaning ALL the same digits as on the original module for both the Software Number AND the Part Number)? Hopefully you still have the original module to check!

Hi Don. Thanks for the reply, I've found it pretty tricky to find info on this, so appreciate you taking the time to share your knowledge with me. Will help me when I chat to the garage and/or dealership about this.
The anti-theft sensor was factory fitted. Sadly I don't have the original module to check that the replacement is exactly like-for-like. The thieves only left the broken trim from the sunglasses holder and some severed wires! Frankly I don't understand why they bothered, since they'd stolen the car keys, but anyway. The parts were ordered were VAG OEM parts, and it was the supplier who informed the garage what parts were needed after being given the reg/VIN, so I'd hope it was the right part, but can't be sure.
