Hi everyone,

After being tired of going to various places to scan my vehicle for a intermittent fault: “Starter System Faulty. Workshop!” On the dash and actually finding nothing I decided to get the OBD11.

The error sometimes stays on for the whole day but sometimes it disappears suddenly after starting the engine. From what I have read online is the ignition switch (normal key, not keyless).

Can anyone help with interpreting this? Since the shops refuse to help me when I show them the scan and they cannot find the error with their obd scanners I have decided to take the DIY route on this one.
Some of them think that “central electronics” is the central locking system

The tool instantly found two faults in the Central Electronics. Below you can find the scan:

Both the error codes in your part-SCAN indicate an intermittent problem in the steering column area!!

The lock-cylinder for the ignition key operates a multi-way switch (it's located at the back of the lock-barrel mechanism) that mimics the ignition-key position. This multi-way switch turns-ON/OFF electrical functions like the ignition/engine-starter.

The multi-way switch has a pair of internal electrical contacts at the very end of the switch housing that sense when the shaft of the ignition-key is fully inserted into the lock-barrel. These contacts are called the "Terminal S" switch

I'm not sure which particular switch is installed in this car - but I include below an example of a multi-way switch for a Golf mk7 (P/N=5Q0-905-849C):

I will replace this ignition switch. I've read online that can cause problems such as engine not stopping etc. and I don't want to get there.
Regarding the other error it might be the fuse, I replaced it recently and now the error seems to be gone.

However, recently I did a MIB1 to MIB2 retrofit to have Apple Carplay, I got the unit coded by somebody and CP-off patched (I have the CP error static) but the unit works fine.
However, I have another error into 5F: Control Module Incorrectly Coded besides the CP (which I plan to remove officially but I need to check what the costs are since I already put a lot of money into the car).

The unit had some functions active from the previous car, functions that my car doesn't have, and I de-activated those with OBD11 but the error is still there.
Do you know how to fix that? I've read something about "Confirmation of installation change", can this be the issue?

Chris: First - making a decision to replace the ignition switch based on this very limited diagnostic information is more than a tad courageous!! I would suggest that more testing is needed - but It really is your choice (I guess if the switch isn't expensive, it's an OK approach)!

As for your MIB problem - the U101400 fault-code is a general error message that could result from lots of problems. So with ONLY the data provided, it ain't possible to comment in an informed manner.

PLUS - using a hack to deal with the CP error complicates stuff greatly!! It's anyone's guess how the hack affects other parts of the MIB software.

The normal way to deal with U101400 fault-code is to compare the long-code and adaptation databases in the old and new modules at an individual record level. Do you have this information - did you create a Backup for the old MIB?

If so, maybe post-up the long-code strings for both modules

Once again, thank you Don for your time and help!

The ignition switch costs around 35 to 70 Euros here. I've already replaced the battery based on the last service advice, but the error still pops up occasionally. It clears by itself once I start the car. I'll try another service visit with my scan and see what they say.

As for the long coding, someone else coded the unit since I didn't have the OBD11 at the time. He copied the MIB1 coding before installing MIB2, and after pasting it, the MIB2 started working correctly, including the RVC display and showing the correct VIN. I have backups of both MIB2 with the long coding from MIB1 before me touching anything and I also still have the MIB1 unit. Do you want the MIB2 coding before changes, or should I quickly plug in the MIB1 and get that coding?

In the meantime I went to the car and put the old mib1 unit and extracted a backup of long coding and adaptations and I did the same with the MIB2 so I can compare them.
I will attach the text logs here as well.

The error code could be in the adaptation channel values -or more likely (I guess) in the the CP hack Don

Hi Don,

I just wanted to post an update.

Just replaced today the Ignition Switch, wasn't that hard and everything went smooth.
I got the exact same part number, original VW part from local dealer for approx. 65$ (shipping included).

The old one looked a little bit "dark" inside, figured it was dirt that got inside and caused the issues.
So far so good, hopefully it will stay this way!
