I last used OBDEleven 8 years ago, right after I got my car ... so I know virtually nothing about the program.
At that time I changed the functions of the brake lights and adjusted the tail light PWM value after installing LED bulbs.

I'm now using the app on IOS (iPhone) and bought a new dongle about a year ago.

2017 Golf Sportwagen S manual transmission.

I replaced the incandescent bulbs in my headlights with LED, and I feel the DRLs are too bright. I want to reduce the PWM level on them.

I found this info:

09 Central Electronics
16 Security Access 31347
10 Adaptations
(10)-Light2SL VLB10-Dimming CD 2' from 26 to 100
(10)-Light3SL VRB21-Dimming CD 3' from 26 to 100

When I look at the dimming CD2 value, it shows the current is 0, so that seems wrong. Are these even the right settings for me to be looking at?

If I look at live data, the DRL duty cycle is around 90%.

If I change the CD2 level to 26 and SLIDE to WRITE, I get this:

What is the correct diagnostic mode, and how do I get there?
I can enter the security access number and get the Success message.

If I look at CHANGE SERVICE, I don't know which one I should select. I have a PRO package. I tried Programming mode, but got the same error.

It seems in the old version, key position mattered, but I haven't found anything about that.

Would appreciate it if somebody could give an old man step-by-step on how to get this done.

I've looked at the online documentation, but it seems to assume a level of knowledge about the minor detail that I don't have.

OK - as for your specific questions, I provide the blue colored words in response:

- Not sure this question has a simple answer! Basically, you need to read the Leuchte-set. The values for each of the 19 x adaptation channels in a Leuchte-set tells a story. So, the tale that is revealed by Leuchte-set story will direct you to the correct adaptation channel

How to I get into the correct diagnostic mode?
- When you power-up the OBD11 software and then connect to the dongle, the "correct diagnostic mode" should be automatically selected for the normal tweaks. So don't worry about this question for these type of coding changes

Does the key position matter? Should the engine be running or not?
- As a general rule, the normal set-up for the "key position" when using OBD11 is Ignition-ON, Engine-OFF (IOEF). That said, there are coding functions that can ONLY be performed with Engine-ON. But for Leuchte-programming, use IOEF

As for the specific matter of DRLs being "too bright" - please post-up screenshots of Leuchte4TFL LB4 and Leuchte2SL VLB10. To be clear, I need to see the values for ALL 19 x adaptation channels in each Leuchte-set in your pictures!

I noticed the first option is bulb type ... make me wonder if that would be the right setting to change, but I'd need to know what to change it to ... or I could experiment as long as it's not risky. Don't want to let the smoke out of the 'lectronics.

Allow me to use the Leuchte-set values that you posted-up as an example of how applied my answers to the questions in your first post.

The story that Leuchte4TFL LB4 tells is like this:

The Lasttyp value says that the lamp that this Leuchte-set controls is incandescent/halogen (at least the Leuchte-set believes this is so). This is because the term "LED" does NOT appear in the name. If this lamp is actually LED, then you have told porkies to the central electrics module. I occasionally run Leuchte-programming training classes for local forum members who have an interest. Whenever any of my students tell Leuchte-porkies - I make then stand in the naughty corner to contemplate their crime (and I make them wear a hat saying "I tell Leuchte-porkies") !!
The first pair of Lichtfunktion channels has the value Tagfahrlicht - which is translated to DRL. This confirms that I'm reading the correct Leuchte-set story
The second pair of Lichtfunction channels has the value for "DRL wink" - which is when the DRL turns-OFF whenever the left-side blinker operates during daylight hours (Since this is the Leuchte-set for the left-side of the car)
The third pair of Lichtfunction channels has the value for Parking-lights/Position-lights and the PWM value is 31% (I know from past experience that 31% is the factory default value for the Parking Light function for incandescent lamps)
The fourth pair of Lichtfunction channels is disabled.

So, reading the story above tells me that if you change the value of Leuchte4TFL LB4-Dimmwert EF 4 - you will alter the illumination of the Parking-light/Position-light function for the left-side DRL lamp. For the equivalent right-side lamp, change the value of Leuchte5 TFL RB32-Dimmwert EF 5

I dismissed the screenshots for Leuchte2SL VLB10 because this Leuchte-set does NOT contain the Tagfahrlicht command

The OE lamp is halogen. I installed an LED replacement bulb. Since it's intended as a halogen replacement, I'll leave the type as it is. I don't imagine any of the other bulb type options are correct for a third-party drop-in replacement. I'll try turning down the PWM tomorrow.

Those variables worked - ended up setting the PWM to 7 - the DRLs now appear slightly dimmer than the headlights. I had to switch service mode to EOL before I could write those values. I tried the default (VW diag) and programming before trying the EOL.
