Help! Infotainment not turning on with ignition. I'm lost. May 30, 2024 16:04:50 GMT

Hi folks!

My google-fu is leaving me hanging on this one, so I'm hoping someone here can help/has been through this.

2014 MK7 GTI. German made. Brazilian sold. A little under 90k miles, mine since new. It's got the base MIB 1 unit, without navigation.

Recently it has stopped turning on automatically with ignition. I turn it on manually, and it works perfectly. The scan report shows a few CANbus missing messages errors, but those are generic. The multimedia itself shows no DTC's.

My first guess would be the MIB is going Kaput. I don't know how to go about diagnosing it, as I have no other unit to do a REDX procedure with. I've never disassembled any of the interior, except for lowering the glovebox to replace the cabin filter, so cabling would not be my first guess, as this is what I was able to find online as the main source of this symptom.

Another guess would be the Gateway failing, that would prevent the media bus from receiving the message from the main bus? How do I diagnose this? If it is the gateway, could I just get another unit with the same part # and install?

So many questions. I'm aware this is a nuisance, but it's killing me not knowing what's wrong and not being able to fix it.

Vehicle has other issues, as you can see in the log below:
Oxygen sensor after cat needs to be changed.
Window controller unit needs to be changed.
Gas cap lock needs diagnosing.
Those will be addressed the next time I do an oil service.

I used to work for one of the four big OEM's, but it was for Stability Control development, so multimedia is out of my league a bit, even though I'm comfortable with general vehicle diagnosis.

First, I suggest that you enable Freeze-frame on your OBD11 account (see HERE) - there is much more diagnostic data sitting in fault memory on this car that currently is NOT on your SCAN!

That said and as indicated in your SCAN, clearly because the 5F module has reported no errors- Freeze-frame won't help with this particular error!

So, obviously your SCAN indicates that the 5F module on this car is perfectly happy to keep the infotainment system switched-OFF on ignition. Of course there could be many reasons for this - but in my experience when the module is behaving strangely and there are NO reported errors, the cause is likely because the module has been coded to operate in this manner. Again, I emphasis my use of the term "likely" since my suggestion is a guess based solely on the information provided.

Now, I have no idea what (if any) coding change might be the culprit - but more words by way of a back story about the coding history for this car in general, and the 5F module in particular might be helpful. Also, I suggest that you post-up a copy of the records in your History file (as an attachment).

Finally, maybe try resetting the 5F module (I doubt this will solve the problem - but it will obviate a possible cause). To do this, ignition-ON and manually turn-ON the "radio", Then press and hold down the ON/OFF button until the "radio" turns-OFF and turns-ON again.

Thanks for the information. I've done another scan with freeze frame enabled, posted below. Also, the full vehicle history is attached (zipped due to filesize). No coding done to 5f. Also, other coding done, I believe should not affect the media behavior.

I've disabled seat belt warning, enabled Full ESC off, air recirculation memory, and refuel quantity display. All of these were done before I got obdeleven, by a qualified VCDS operator. history.zip (135.19 KB)

As predicted, resetting by holding the power button didn't change anything.

When I had an issue like this in the past during vehicle development, I'd just plug a can sniffer and see if there are any error frames in any of the can busses, or if any ECU is not sending a message. I'd think obdeleven could do this if it wanted, but only a small subset of users would benefit, so I understand why it hasn't been implemented.

As I've already said, if the MIB is not turning-ON with ignition switch-ON and since the continuous fault-monitoring system in the car is reporting NO errors in any of your SCANs - the 5F module is perfectly happy with situation!

Again as I have said, this strongly suggests (to me at least) that the coding set-up of the 5F module in this car is consistent with the operation of the MIB!

Now, as to the cause of the problem - I don't know the answer. However and solely from the information provided thus far, I believe that it's safe to conclude that it's HIGHLY UNLIKELY (albeit, it's not entirely impossible) that the reason is related to a physical/electrical fault in the MIB, or a coding matter that OBD11 can detect!

I deliberately selected the words "that OBD11 can detect" to emphasis the limitation of OBD11 and ALL other third party diagnostic devices like VCDS and VCP. These tools are NOT absolute in the sense that they are NOT able to record the history of ALL modifications that users make to CAN modules.

Clearly in this case, the operation of the MIB is different to the factory set-up - so, obviously something has changed on the MIB set-up since this car left the dealer's delivery yrad! Also clearly, because you own own and have used a "CAN sniffer" on this car, it's possible that unusual work outside the normal OBD11 user has happened to the MIB some time in the past. Of course, this is a wild guess - it's not an accusation, I'm simply attempting to help by piecing together the information that you have provided.

Again, nothing in this thread provides a clear diagnostic path as a way forward - my ONLY lingering suspicion (because of the nature of the problem) is that maybe modifications were made in the green engineering screen on the MIB! If changes were made to the engineering screen, historic records will NOT be be kept by OBD11. Once more, I emphasize that this is a last-resort guess as a prompt for your memory!!

The objective of the post was somewhat to see if someone has gone through a similar situation, but also maybe someone sees something I don't.
I do realize none of the diagnostic info provided is related to the 5F module, I only posted it since I was asked to.
The reason why I'm suspecting the gateway, is multiple ECU's are complaining about missing messages, so the gateway is the common denominator. I thought maybe someone could point me in the right direction.
The "can sniffer" mentioned, I had, was a company issued Vector VN1640, and usually CANalyzer, or CANape was used, but never in my personal vehicle, since I don't have the right DBC's for it. I only used the equipment and software in vehicles from my former employer's brands.
Since no wiring change was done, no coding on the Gateway, or infotainment. My next guess is a hardware failure (Failing can transceiver somewhere, or IDK, just an overall failing ECU). So back to square one.
I did find a late version MIB2 available locally, that has the added benefit of Android Auto, so I might just buy it for the upgrade, and if it fixes the issue, I'll know it was the MIB1. Fingers crossed.
I'd like to thank you both for the replies though. Specially DOM, since I see you take a LOT of time to answer most people, at least to ask for more information, so it's greatly appreciated. And vwjap, for keeping me from just purchasing a random gateway online.

Well you’d lose that if you get CP removed at a dealer
Plus if you have nav on a MIB1 and upgrade to a MIB2 also with nav and get CP removed you’ll lose nav because it’s a different FEC and it didn’t have that FEC out of the factory
