Hello guys!
I have got a question about rls sensor i have to replace the sensor it was damaged it was cracked i got the b1366 76 fault code witch is wrong mounting position.the windshield never was replaced its original. So i replaced the broken sensor with new gel pad i bought a sensor with the same partnumber 5q0955547. Fitting was easy and straight forward. After that i have got the same fault code and nothing changed... My auto lights are working good but my wipers dont work in auto mode, when i switch to int position it will work like a regular wiper. My question is how can i solve this problem or how the bodycontroller knows its mounted wrong ? Ita a 3 wire sensor 1 wire is supply,other is earth, and the last is connected to bodycontroller. I dont have any other fault codes just this and when i clear it it will pop back. Can someone help me out a little?

When you say "i bought a sensor with the same partnumber 5q0955547", I'm sure that the original part number was correct - but AFAIK, replacement sensors with that part number normally also have an extension "A". or "B".
As reported by lots of folk that also have the same error message , the cause can be the result of using a replacement sensor with the wrong extension. Of course I can't say with absolute certainty that this is the cause - but I suggest that you consider this matter in your fault finding investigations (maybe a Google search will help)
Anyway, this is my understanding of which sensor to retrofit: - 5Q0-955-547 A - Vehicles built before 30 June 2016
- 5Q0-955-547 B - Vehicles built after 30 June 2016

hmm........ OK, the other problem that often arises with this retrofit project is the cleanliness of the parts and the windshield. There MUST be absolutely NO dust, or detritus on the new parts and the windshield and the back of the senor housing MUST be scrupulously clean - meaning spotless!! Plus - when the new pad is installed - it must be free of ALL air -bubbles. Here is an extract from the repair manual emphasising this point: ♦ Even if the sensor is installed correctly, small air bubbles can form between the windshield and the connecting pad. The contact surface must be free-of-bubbles after approximately 10 minutes. ♦ If the contact surface is not free of bubbles after 10 minutes, the Rain/Light Recognition Sensor - G397- must be removed and installed again. ♦ Air bubbles between the windshield and the connecting pad
cause Rain/Light Recognition Sensor - G397- malfunctions.
If you can't clear the error - I suggest that you remove and re-fit the pad and sensor making sure that they are spotlessly clean and that the pad is free of bubbles when it's bedded-down onto the windshield. If the pad is soiled, you can use adhesive tape - apply the tape to the pad, then pull-off
I assume that the replacement sensor was new and I assume that you coded the new sensor the same as the old sensor

Hello yes i know the cleaning is important as far as i can cleaned the window and the sensor looks like no air bubbles present... The sensor was used but good if the guy wont lie and its not a retrofit its an original extra i did not code anything

Hello, In addition to Don's info: There is also the sensor 5Q0955547 (without letters), an RLFS sensor. This was installed until 2014 and enabled “rain closing”. This is new but no longer available, and used rarely and therefore expensive, because of the possibility of "rain closing". Yea you are right it has 4 sensors for rain and 2 other for light i think. But the strange thing is the light part of the sensor works so if i think right it has supply and earth and the communication wire is good.. there is no other fault codes in the whole car... It seems that that the bcm need a calibration with the new sensor but if i right there is no way to calibrate or reset the sensor....maybe im that unlucky to have 1 cracked bad sensor and i have a good looking sensor but its bad but it throws the same error....

So your sensor 5Q0955547 doesn't have a letter after it, right? Then your car must have been built before May 2015 and the one with the 4 sensor lenses must be the right one. The sensor you purchased is certainly not new, but used. There is always the possibility that something is defective. Especially with this sensor, which is in high demand because of the option to convert to “rain closing”. If the following installation instructions do not help, then it may well be defective. Did you follow Don's advice in his second post? Important information is contained there. These are also supposed to be available separately as replacements, but I don't know of any source. I once read in an article that after applying the new gel pad to the sensor, it is best to leave it protected for 1-2 days and only then be mounted on the window. Also look on the web, for example: “Exchange RLS Golf7”. There are various tips in forums. I cannot contribute more to solving your problem. Good luck.

Nothing strange about the light part working and the rain part not working!! Think about how these two sensors work: - Light-sensor: This is a self contained transducer(s) - its likely either a phototransistor, photodiode, or a light dependent resistor. These are semiconductor devices that simply "look" through the windshield at the ambient light level
- Rain-sensor: This consists of a number of transducers that detect water droplets on the 4 x blue dots. This detection process is more dependent on the quality of the pad because rain-detection relies on reflections from the water droplets (because of surface tension) correctly being received by the rain-sensor

And when they are damaged during removal - the broken part is often NOT readily evident
As for NOT checking the coding in the replacement sensor - it's entirely your choice to omit this important part of the retrofit exercise
