Hi,

I guess I am not the only one facing the random travel assist and emergency assist errors. They are coming from nowhere and won’t stop beeping. I understood it’s an issue with the steering wheel.

Does anyone know if we can disable the warnings or at least disable the beeping made my the errors?

It might be possible to prevent warning messages and warning sounds by turning off the travel assist function. I believe that this can be done by pressing the little button on the end of the left control stalk - that will then bring up a menu where you can turn off travel assist.

The 'emergency assist' function cannot be turned off, but it is possible that it might rely on driver inputs (turning) of the steering wheel in addition to detection of the driver touching the steering wheel. It sound to me like your problem is caused by the system that detects touch on the steering wheel not working. The only solution for that - which is well documented - is a new steering wheel.

Sure, you can not use the functions. You can even disable Emergency Assist in every ignition cycle.
Still, the warnings come up anyways.

Disabling the capacitive steering wheel in the camera and acc (abbrevated KLR there) could have the desired effect, but since I never had the chance to try this and I never got reliable feedback from people affected by defective steering wheels, you are free to test it.

Do you think the car relies solely on detection of touch (via the capacitive function of the steering wheel) to detect that the driver is present, or is it possible that the car is also capable of detecting driver steering inputs that are made to determine that the driver is alert and engaged in the operation / supervision of the vehicle?

This is more of a curiosity question than anything else, I don't think the answer would help the OP much.

Lets make this a little sightseeing about how the can communication works.
Most control units are broadcasting their state and some live data as a can message. Always, everytime.
So does the steering and the touch sensor inside the steering wheel.

All control units receiving this information can parse this information and use them. And in case of an error reported by another control module they can restrict their functions. This is reported in the event log as "received error value". There is nothing wrong with the control unit reporting this, but it is relying on 3rd control unit which is not working properly.
Same applies to "Missing message" - in that case an expected message did not come through in time at all.

The A5 camera by default is expecting the steering information to come through. This includes the applied torque by the driver. This was the main and only criteria for driver activity.
When the capacitive steering wheel is equipped, the camera is also coded to check for this message and throw an error in case there is an error reported.

My hope is that disabling the message surveillance by coding, also the error is gone. Sadly, this is not always the case, as some control units are tolerant to coding errors, still crediting broadcasts they are coded not to regard. Disabling them will only mask the "missing message" procedure then.

It is under warranty.
