Hi guys

I have a the following snap of the error on my 2015 Golf GTI;

P201400 - Intake Manifold Runner Position Sensor/Switch Circuit

Intermittent

Priority - 2

Malfunction frequency counter - 13

Unlearning counter - 255

km-Mileage - 158701 km

Engine speed - 0.00 1/min

Normed load value - 0.0 %

Vehicle speed - 0 km/h

Coolant temperature - 48 °C

Intake air temperature - 50 °C

Ambient air pressure - 930 mbar

I have tried to replace the Intake flap sensor found just behind the Oil filter with an after market one, after replacing the car wouldn't crank at all. Then I put the old sensor back, the car is fine just the annoying Check Engine light.

What could be the problem? The aftermarket sensor was faulty?

Car is at 164 000km now. Daily car since 2015.

I never like part snippets (or any edit) of SCAN reports because valuable diagnostic data is lost.

Those posting edited SCAN reports often believe that there is ONLY one way to read a SCAN - but this is wrong! There is lots of hidden nuance in the data in a SCAN that can't be exposed if the report is not posted in full (without edits)!

So, let's look at your SCAN snippet.

The date stamp on this error is 2023-10-05 (@ about 4:00 PM).

Now, one of the lost data items because a full unedited SCAN report was NOT posted is the date of the SCAN. I don't know when this SCAN was taken, but if I assume that the SCAN date was 20th March 2024 - it means that 315 days have past since this error was first registered in the car's fault memory

Again from the SCAN snippet, the Malfunction frequency count =13.

If this car was in regular use, this means that the same fault that was first recorded on 2023-10-05 re-occurred 13 x times in the 315 day interval until the date of the SCAN. This is a fault re-occurrence rate of about 4% - meaning that this fault re-occurs 4 x times in 100 x days. This is a very intermittent fault - so very difficult to catch and therefore difficult to diagnose!!

Another piece of data that is unknown because a full SCAN report has not been provided is the engine type that is installed in this car. The Intake Manifold Runner Position Sensor is called the "Intake manifold flap potentiometer" (G336). The way that G336 is connected to the Engine module (i.e. how the potentiometer gets its 5Volt power supply, how it is earthed and where it connects to the module) varies with the engine type.

Also on some engines, the 3 x wires for G336 are terminated onto a separate coupling point in the engine on-route to the engine connector - so these termination pins could be the cause for this error.

Have you tried clearing the error? This should clear the "annoying Check Engine light" - at least until the intermittent fault re-occurs!

PS: I don't know if "the aftermarket sensor was faulty" - the proper way to diagnose this fault is to check the integrity of the 3 x wire loom for the potentiometer and ALL the pins/terminations in the loom between the engine module and G336. However, the very intermittent nature of this error makes diagnosis really difficult!!

Apologies for not including the full scan report: I rescanned 2 days ago please see below.

Just a bit of background. After I had detected this fault I discovered the small pipe connecting to the airbox had been taken off the airbox just hanging and I plugged it back, i suspect it could have been the culprit.

The error is always on, it can go away maybe once a week until I switch the engine off then when i start it the check engine light is there on again.

Do you have any pictures or guide that can help me clean the wiring looms maybe? G336 sensor is dirty itself?

kingcoda : As I said in my last reply - the G336 sensor is listed as a "potentiometer". I'm not sure if you are familiar with this type od device - but it's basically a variable resistor. I'm not sure of the exact construction of G336 on this engine - but it will be something like this:

Electrically, the engine module supplies +5 Volts onto pin #1 and pin #3 is earthed.

Mechanically, the "Wiper" is physically tied to the Intake Manifold Flap.

So, what happens is that as the position of the Intake Manifold flap moves - the "wiper" position on the potentiometer also moves. This results in the voltage on pin #2 varying in accordance with the flap position - the Engine module reads the voltage on pin #2!

This is the wiring arrangement for your CHHB engine:

If you are not familiar with VW's nomenclature on their wiring diagrams - notice T14e /5 on the yellow/red wire on the coupling point TMOR. This means:

T14 = A connector with a Total of 14 x pin positions
e = a designation that identifies this connector from the multiple other 14 x pin connectors on the car
/5 = pin #5
