Hello everyone, I recently embarked on a project to upgrade the headlights on my car. I removed the original bi-xenon headlights with Dynamic Light Assist (DLA) and LED daytime running lights, and replaced them with Osram LEDhl104 units. These new headlights are designed to replace xenon lights on the Golf 7 without DLA and with halogen daytime running lights. After installation, I successfully recoded the control units to remove DLA and also removed the AFS module (which I plan to reintegrate in the future for vertical headlight positioning control using the rear sensor). However, I've encountered an issue with the high beams. When I attempt to activate them, the following errors are displayed: - Left low beam headlamp reflector motor (Open circuit / short circuit to B+): B121B15
- Right low beam headlamp reflector motor (Open circuit / short circuit to B+): B121C15
I suspect there might be some rewiring required to resolve this. Has anyone here faced a similar issue or can provide some guidance on how to troubleshoot this? Upon examining the electrical diagrams for both types of headlights on the Golf 7, I noticed that the only difference between xenon with LEDs and xenon with halogens in connection to the control unit J519 is two wires. EXAMPLE FOR LEFT HEADLIGHT ONLY(MX1) In the original setup , pin 10 of the headlight connects to pin 10 of the BCU. However, in the new setup, pin 13 of the headlight should connect to pin 10 of the BCU. Similarly, pin 8 originally connects to pin 39 of the BCU, whereas in the new setup, it seems pin 14 should go to pin 39 of the BCU. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! lupaiolis :Ciao! Wow, I wish my Italian language skills (which are rudimentary at best with a dialect) were as good as your English - respect!!! So. my apology if you already know this stuff - but allow me to change your term "BCU" to BCM (Body Control Module). BCM is a term used by VCDS - in OBD11 speak it's equivalence is central electrics module. Nevertheless, lets continue to use BCM for this thread
Here's a picture of the physical BCM housing showing the connectors: My reason for including the picture above is to highlight the fact that the BCM has 3 x Sockets - so when identifying pins on this module, it's necessary to also reference the relevant Socket
OK - now let's talk about wiring! As you would have understood by looking at the VW wiring diagrams, there are a few versions of Headlight fittings on MQB platform cars like your mk7. And as you already know, J519=BCM=central electrics module
On the bog-standard version Halogen headlight fitting - the high-beam and Public Lighting functions share the same physical lamp (each uses a separate filament in the lamp). These headlight fittings have a 10 x pin connector whereas HID headlight fittings have a 14 x pin connector
For MX1, high-beam on the Halogen fitting is connected to pin #8 on the 10 x pin connector and on pin 39, Socket B of the BCM (when you read T46b /39 on the VV wiring diagram - it means pin #39 of Socket B which has a total of 46 x pins)
For MX1, high-beam on the HID fitting is connected to pin #11 on the 14 x pin connector and on pin #23, Socket B of the BCM
I'm not sure how you managed the 10 x pin to 14 x pin mismatch on this retrofit project - so I can't comment on the way forward. However, rather than re-pinning the BCM sockets (which isn't difficult, but it's fiddly), there may be an easier option (perhaps?).
As you may be aware, ALL the lamps in the headlight fittings are controlled by the BCM via "Leuchte-sets" - each lamp has its own individual Leuchte-set. This means that each Leuchte-set controls an individual pin on the BCM. In this case, this subsequently means that the BCM in this car has a Leuchte-set that controls the HID high-beam lamp that's connected to pin #23, Socket B! So, it may be possible to re-program this Leuchte-set as if it controlled a halogen high-beam lamp - as required by the new headlight. Under this option, if the Leuchte-set is reprogrammed - you would need to re-pin the 10/14 x pin headlight connector - which is much easier (IMO, of course).
However, regardless of whether you re-pin the BCM socket, or the headlight connector - it WILL be necessary to re-code the relevant Leuchte-set for each car-side so that the BCM is told to operate a Halogen style high-beam lighting function

Sorry, I don't know why I called it BCU instead of BCM. Maybe I was thinking of something else while writing.
Perhaps I explained myself poorly, but I always meant Xenon headlights, just with the halogen position light instead of the LED. Both have a 14 PIN connector, not 10. This is is my oem setup:  And this is what the manufacturer of the osram headlights wants you to have (xenon with halogen lights and positioning vertical motors):  From what I see, both use the 14 PIN connector, but if you look, there are the two pins I mentioned that go to different places. PIN 13 goes to PIN 10 of the BCM, and PIN 14 goes to PIN 39 of the BCM. In my original setup, instead, PIN 13 and 14 are not connected; in their place, PIN 8 and 10 are connected to the respective PIN 10 and 39 of the BCM. Hope It makes sense :/ Thanks |

OK, that's very different to my understanding of your words in the first post!! What I wrote in my first reply is still valid - but most of the information does NOT apply to this project. In respect of your concerns about the mismatch pins: - your first wiring diagram (factory headlights) says the following:
- Pin #8 = Parking Light
- Pin #10 = DRL (Signal)
- Pin #12 =DRL (Power Supply)
- your second wiring diagram says the following:
- Pin #14 = Static cornering light
- Pin #13 = Parking Light
- Pin #12 = DRL
The factory headlights use LED type DRLs that require 2 x wires from the BCM to work; a wire to set-up the power supply for LED circuits inside the headlight housing and a separate wire that contains the signal information - meaning the switch-ON/OFF data.
I assume that the DRLs operate correctly (albeit the Lasttyp channel setting on Leuchte4TFL LB4 and Leuchte5 TFL RB32 probably should be changed to 6 - LED Lichtmodul). Do the new headlight fittings have a static cornering light and if so, do they work? Also, do the Parking Lights work?

No they do not have any type of cornering light. They do not have parking lights. All they have are LED DRLs, LED main beams, and turn signals.
By supplying the DRLs with 100% power, they shine brightly, and by supplying 50% power, they display a small dot. So, I adjusted the lighting channel to supply 100% power when the main beam is off and 50% when it's on.
Everything is working fine except for the "xenon flaps." :/ I also want to express my gratitude for your excellent responses.  |

I note that BCM Byte 02 Bit 0-2 is set to hex02 - which means AFS,BCM-Highbeam. Was this how you removed DLA? And what EXACTLY do you mean by "removed the AFS module" given that the hex55 module (J745) appears in you SCAN?
Finally, as shown in your wiring diagrams, the factory headlights do NOT have the connections for pins #1-4 on the 26 x pin connector for J745. How did you deal with this?

What am I missing? You're right, there, as you pointed out, they differentiate between "LED Position Lights" and "LED daytime running lights" but in reality in Italy (or maybe in Europe) the position lights are simply lights that remain on when the "LED low beams" are on. In the case of Osram headlights, the "position light" is only turned on when the DRL power is set to 50%, so it does not have a specific channel for the position light. Considering that I tried turning on all possible channels and there was nothing different. DRL On (very bright for daytime use) (Leuchte4TFL -> Dimmwert: 100):  Position On (Less bright and with the "dot" on the left side) (Leuchte4TFL -> Dimmwert: 50) :  Low beam On with Position On: As you can see all modes work correctly. Yes, the "AFS,BCM-Highbeam" option was the only one that was giving me flap errors, the others were giving me DLA errors. Moreover, I removed the coding for the DLA from the camera as well, and obviously by removing the AFS module. And what EXACTLY do you mean by "removed the AFS module" given that the hex55 module (J745) appears in you SCAN?
Finally, as shown in your wiring diagrams, the factory headlights do NOT have the connections for pins #1-4 on the 26 x pin connector for J745. How did you deal with this? I'm not sure why the module still appears in the report, but probably I didn't refresh the modules after removing it, so the application remembers how it was before. (As you can see Gateway reports error: U101E00 - Headlamp range control module No communication)I will replace the current module J745 with the module 5Q0 907 357, which corresponds to diagram 2. I'll bring a total of 8 cables, 4 for each headlight, and connect them to the respective pins 1-4. From what I see in the diagram, these pins are used to control the motors and are not CAN Bus communications. So, I know for certain that the headlight no longer communicates with the J745 via CAN bus but simply through PWM (maybe). The new control unit 5Q0 907 357 will only act as an intermediary between the height sensor on the rear axle and the headlights, so as to move them and position them vertically. I certainty bow to your better understanding of the Osram Headlights - but with no offense intended, I invite that you consider another alternative
Maybe look again at the wiring diagrams in your previous post. Notice that on the factory headlight wiring loom for this car, the Position Light signal is transmitted from BCM pin #39, Socket B to pin #8 on the factory headlight plug. Incidentally, see that the wiring diagram labels the headlight connector pin #8 with "58" - this means Terminal 58 in the nomenclature for Bosch Standard designations (T58 = "Side-marker lamps")
However and as you have said - the Osram headlights are designed to retrofit into the arrangement in your second wiring diagram in which the Position Light signal is transmitted from BCM pin #10, Socket B to pin #13 on the headlight plug. I understand why you believe that the Position Light function is working correctly. But, from my explanation above, I believe that it's not unreasonable for a forum member who lives on a large continent deep in the Southern hemisphere to suspect (guess really) that the Osram headlight might be expecting Position Light information from pin #13 on it's 14 x pin connector, maybe?
So, I suggest the following: eyeball the 14 x pin connector on the Osram headlight - does it have a wire terminated on pin #13? If not, your explanation is correct (and I apologize)
And, for the sake of completeness - also look at pin #14 - is it terminated with a wire to the Osram headlight fitting? If so, the new fittings are expecting information from the BCM for the static cornering light function

It is possible that they have PIN 13 and 14, I need to check the headlight.

Im still waiting for the connectors I ordered online, when I have them I will make the new loom with all the pins connected and then we can try again by coding maybe.

I need to emphasize again that these Osram fittings are extremely non-OEM - so it's anyone's guess how they are designed to operate! That said, I don't believe that pin #13 provides any high-beam information.
The logic in my previous reply was really based on the manner that your factory headlights operated to provide position-light information to the DRLs. As I said, your factory HID headlights need 2 x wires for the LED type DRLs; a wire to set-up the LED power supply (i.e. via Leuchte4TFL LB4) and a separate wire for the DRL signal.
On the Osram headlights - Leuchte4TFL LB4 is retained, but your assumption is that the purpose of this Leuchte-set changes - meaning that it now provides signal information (and maybe you are correct). However, the possibility remains that the Osram headlights also uses Leuchte4TFL LB4 as the power-supply Leuchte-set and it uses the Leuchte-set from BCM pin #10, socket B (i.e. Leuchte2SL VLB10) to provide the DRL signal information that switches between DRL and position-light.
The basis for my suggestion (guess) is the statement in the Osram data-sheet that says NO coding changes are needed for these fittings. This doesn't make sense (to me) - if your hypothesis is true (again, no offense)
Should the high beam turn on if it detects a signal on the shutter PIN, or not? Yes, in both your factory installed headlights and in the headlight option that the Osram fittings expect - the the signal from BCM pin #23, socket B determines the shutter position for MX1.
And, AFAIK - the ONLY difference between the 2 x version J745 modules is that whereas the factory version module sends CAN based messages to the headlight to determine the required leveling position for high-beam, the other module drives leveling motors directly.
However, I'm not sure what is meant to happen if there is a mismatch between the correct leveling position of the headlights and the shutter information. My hunch is that for safety reasons (blinding drivers in on-coming cars) if the headlight X and Y position is not correct for high-beam - the system's internal logic will prohibited the shutters from operating, maybe?
In this car with J745 missing - V48 is effectively disabled! I'm hoping that this is the reason why your high-beam isn't working (and hence the errors in your SCAN) - but again I'm guessing

yes - albeit I have seen a form of BCM Byte 02, Bit 0-2 coding that uses hex03 (instead of hex02) for the set-up that the Osram fitting expects. This enables HBA (High-beam assist). Maybe you could try this setting after these current problems are resolved (of course you will need also to tell the A5 module to start operating HBA too) ?

This is totally inconsistent with the Osram datasheet link that I posted earlier which doesn't mention static cornering lights in their LEDhl104 fittings
Look at the picture below - I got the Osram connector pin-out on the left-side of my picture from @zero185 and I have flipped your picture vertically to line-up with the pin-out diagram:
So, if my understanding is correct (and it may not be correct), it looks to me like pin #13 is indeed present and NO pin #14 (i.e. NO static cornering lights). This is consistent with the Osram datasheet!
Also, are you sure about the wiring diagram in your previous post regarding the version factory headlights that the Osram fittings are expecting? I ask because on the second wiring diagram in your previous post, the unused pins on the 14 x pin connector are Pin #5, Pin #7, Pin #8 and Pin #10.
However, as is shown in my pin-out diagram above the unused pins on the Osram fitting are pin #7, pin#9 and pin #14

That scheme is just to show the 1234 pins I don't think is correct on the other pins.
Pin 1 is bottom right in your flipped picture so the connector on the left has to be mirrored to connect it.

Finally, after months, I managed to get my hands on the car.
I connected (hopefully correctly) the headlights according to the various diagrams we discussed.
I reconnected the AFS control unit (along with the 8 wires going to the headlights to control the motors), and it works, the headlights go up and down without any problems and adapt according to the sensor present in the rear axle.
The only thing that doesn't work is still the high beams!
I tried coding the BCM to hex03 instead of hex02, and when I try to activate the high beams, it gives me an error of non-functioning flaps (like before rewiring).
I ask for help again! Haha 😭

lupaiolis : hi again... you are back!!! Well done on the progress - significant success!! It's been a while - so lets reset and get a shared understanding of the current situation. If I look again at your 2 x wiring diagrams above, I note that: - The high-beam signal from the original factory Xenon fittings on this car terminate on pin #11 on the car-side headlight connector (note the designation "T56a" - which means "High-beam with indicator lamp" in Bosch termination speak)
- On the "manufacturer of the osram headlights wants you to have" diagram, the high-beam signal also terminates on the same pin as above
- On both wiring diagrams, the high-beam signal emanate from T46b /23 (and T46b /22 for the the right-side headlight fitting) on the BCM
I assume that the the coding on Leuchte10SHUTTER LB23 and Leuchte11SHUTTER RB22 (note the blue bits) have not been altered from the factory setting. Have you measured the voltage on pin #11 on the headlight connector when high-beam is activated?
Also, this car has an A5 module - which can control High-Beam Assist (HBA). I don't have access to the long-code helper screens for the series module on your SCAN - so I don't know if HBA is activated, or if the long-code settings on the A5 module are compatible with the new Osram LED headlights? I might have solved the mystery.
In my car, for some absurd reason, the cable going to PIN 11 exists but isn't terminated near the BCM.
This means (at least I think) that during production, the car was meant to have regular Xenon headlights and not the LED ones with DLA, and it was changed at the last minute.
In fact, I couldn't understand the problem since the cable was there.
I checked with a multimeter only to realize it wasn't reaching the BCM!
I'll continue to provide updates as soon as I connect PIN 11 to its respective pins 22 and 23 on the BCM.
If everything works properly, I've successfully retrofitted Osram headlights onto a car with original DLA bixenon headlights.
This post could become a very useful tutorial for those like me who had headlights that were damaged by micro cracks.
Searching online, I couldn't find many tutorials as detailed as this!

I wanted to ask if you had a list of what all you coded to remove the AFS? I installed a set of the OSRAM LEDHL-104 headlights on my 2016 Golf R and I’m currently getting an AFS ERROR. I honestly don’t need the afs so removing it all together works for me. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Did you end up following the entire tutorial done by ZERO815 PDF or did you make your own additions? I know his set up is to run wires and then use a different AFS module along with coding. Was that only solution that you found working on USA based cars? I came across this electronicworks.de/en/produkt/mk7-headlight-controlling-adapter-golf-7/ Spoke to the company and they assured me the harness will eliminate the AFS error even on USA based cars, however I am still skeptical as your way and ZERO815 pdf seems only things i found that work. Any chance you can advise or anyone else |
