Getting random stalling issues with my Golf Wagon and we've narrowed it down to the ECM with the "no communication from ECM" 1314 code.
A few questions: First, can you reprogram a used ECM with matching part number ? (I've just been told by a local garage specializing in german cars that it CANNOT be done, you can only reprogram a "blank and new" ECM from VW which is prohibitively expensive ! I'm no specialist, but there are many Youtube videos of people doing just that and another mechanic told me it's very doable if you have matching part number and you go to the VW dealer. Just wondering who's right...??)
Second, can anyone tell me where's the relay that powers the ECM ? Having a hard time finding relevant diagram since there's always a difference between the pictures found online and what I see in my 2010 Golf.
Thirdly, am planing to look at the wiring to the ECM, so any suggestions on where to look more specifically appreciated !

Mark. That's the worst thing I hear about on line. In fact bad people steal ecm's out of cars. Then photo the vehicle vin number , plate and location of the car. They then post on line the info so the victim can buy it back. That's how expensive and hard it is to get a correct "replacement" installed into a 1,2,3 year old car. I recommend you do ALL the little fixes first. They're cheap and usually easy.

And you want to maybe try it on a car that hasn't been made in over a decade. Do that last.

Ive' had an ah moment. Clear the codes. Then turn the ignition on BUT don't actually crank or start the car. The ECM must turn on first and so will throw a code if it's bad. Or you will get the bad ECM power relay code. No code? Then not THE problem.
Free and easy test.

Or do the ignition ON/Off 3 times in a row. If it's bad you will get 3 identical error codes in a row

Thanks - I'll keep that in mind.
The ECM (or ECU) isn't necessarily bad, it can be a bad relay or bad wiring.
The hard thing about this issue is that it's intermittent.
I could go to a dealer and he'd just tell me "all's fine" if the problem doesn't occur when he scans, which is why, for the time being, I don't want to erase my codes. Also, the problem with the ECM, if it has no power, it can't throw codes since it's not even powered up ! The only way I got the 1314 code for the ECM was because it came from the TCM telling me it had no or "sporadic" communication from the ECM.
There's a specialized shop here dealing with all german brands. It's been around here since 1974 and is the go to shop for VW enthusiasts. I've gone to see them just to get a feel for them and the advisor did suggest not to play with the ECM and to let them do a complete diagnostic.
The way the problem manifests itself is clearly an electrical problem, either related in some way to the ECM or affecting the ECM. There's no doubt in my mind about that now.
For now, my plan is to take out the ECM and look for anything obvious to my untrained eyes (loose wires, obvious signs of water infiltration, etc.).
Second, if nothing's obvious, I'll take it to the specialized shop for analysis and go from there.

Well - Took out the ECM and looked at it. Nothing seems wrong, all connectors seem fine and very dry. Played with wiring while around there while car was running and did not affect running of car in way shape or form, so I guess I have not found the source of the problem. I put everything back together and used the car for an errand. Nothing has changed since my Gold, again, half stalled a few times when coming back from the store. Might be ECM itself or another component somewhere else in the electrical system.
Will now try to find a good local VW specialized shop (NOT a dealership !) and will try to get it diagnosed.

That "specialist" shop you mentioned earlier is likely your best bet. They also said its best to NOT mess with the ECM. I'm not sold on a solely electrical problem. Certainly intermittent electrical problems ae the devil to find. (Once had a wire that was broken in the middle inside the insulatio.,but looked perfect.
Several times you said you had driven a bit without trouble, then later the problem re occurred. Something with operatingtemperature maybe.? There are tons of anti pollution items that are operated when the temperature gets up to running .
Please post what finally happens. Good luck
