Hi I have working Adaptive overtaking (automated lane switching) The car automatically changes lanes from the right lane to the left, but not from the left one to the right (aborts lane change), except when I overtake a car. It seems like a normal behavior. Anyone has any ideas why this might be so?

Yep. The Side Assist needs to detect a car on that particular side before you are able to to use the assisted lane change. This is for safety reasons to make sure the sensor is actually working and not just reporting that there is nothing at all :-)

Hi newty, What a stupid safety feature...it will allow me to go in the left lane without checking the sensors... But going back to the original right lane, well, there it draws a line. It is not like the left lane is always empty. I noticed that this "safety feature" gets disabled at speeds above 165 km/h. At those speeds, the right lane is always visible from the left. I would assume this "safety feature" could be easily disabled by editing the dataset, by simply lowering this treahold of 165 km/h...

When there is single car detected, it will keep that change enabled.
Datasets are all signed, no luck there

newty : hmm............ I need your help, please. I'm not understanding your advice- are you saying that the on a mk8 there is no mechanism for shutting-down the nanny protection mechanism for right-side overtaking when using ACC (I'm not quite sure if this is the same as brkica term " Adaptive overtaking (automated lane switching)")? On 3Q0 chassis Golfs (mk7.5), there is a software switch in the hex13 module specifically for enabling/disabling the right-side prevention facility for overtaking. See Byte 2, Bit 5 below - apology for showing a VCDS screenshot on an OBD11 forum.
Is this software switch not in the long-code string for the hex13 module on a mk8?

I think we are talking about different things here. The automatic lane change will only automatically switch lanes when the sensor has been checked to work.
So starting from a highway rest area you will need to trigger the steady yellow warning light at least once before the travel assist is able to suggest a lane change.
Of course you can still disable the overtake right protection in Golf 8, but that is not point here I think
