Hi all, lower part of the front DRL is quitting on me and the repair is neither easy neither cheap. Based on google search this is not to uncommon problem among a3 owners. I am wondering if a quick and dirty solution is possible, as other side might dye soon too. Can I somehow turn off lower part of DRL LEDs on both sides via OBD. Can this somehow be coded in without throwing any errors.See image of the damage bellow. Thank you in advance for your help and recommendations. CAR; AUDI A3 8vFL 2017 EU-spec

ottobe : hmm....... not sure what country this is - but given that this is a known failure in OEM equipment (i.e. melting LEDs internal to the headlight assembly) I would have thought that Audi should be responsible for fixing the DRL. What are the consumer laws in your country when this type of Audi manufacturing fault is clearly evident? Anyhow - to answer your specific question - the 2 x sections of DRL light-tube inside the headlight housing are both supplied by the same wires/pins on headlight connector. This means that it's not possible to disable just one section of the DRL lamps - it's an all-or-nothing situation.

Thanks for the tip dv52. I am from the Netherlands. Maybe the dealer will have mercy although I doubt. But I will definitely check. KR

I’ve just had the same failure and found this forum for solutions.
Is it possible to turn OFF the WHOLE DRL “C” shape light in a 2017 S3 Premium Plus?
This way the failure is no longer evident? I keep my headlights on (not auto, ON) 24/7.
No warranty left from US dealers on this (2017 with 66k miles) and aftermarket warranty won’t touch lighting.
I can’t have it look this way, but also would prefer not to spend thousands to fix it. I have my OBD11 “Pro” though, so maybe there’s a solution?

mike: Hi. hmm........ I'm surprised!! Given that I happen to live in the very, very deep south- of course I'm not familiar with the minutiae of American legal practices, but I would have thought that your consumer rights were more "enlightened" in the litigation-rich land of the free!! This a is clear case of a manufacturing defect that makes the factory DRL equipment not-fit-for-purpose, so my expectation was that Audi-America would recognize their liability -even outside the warranty period. But obviously - I'm wrong!! Anyhow - back to your wants I'm not quite sure I understand what you mean by "turn OFF the WHOLE DRL “C” shape light". So, let's start with a fairly simple tweak that transfers the DRL function to the low-beam lights (without having to use the low-beam position on the rotary-light-switch). This tweak goes like this: - Ignition-ON, Engine-OFF and plug-in OBD11 dongle into the car's OBD port
- Fire-up OBD11 software and connect to the dongle
- On the Control Units screen, select the central electrics module
- Select Adaptation
- In the search box, enter "front" and select Außenlicht_Front (or Aussenlicht Front, depending on your module)
- Scroll-down the list of child-channels and select Fahrlicht bei Tag
- On the screen shot above -select the 2nd instance of Daytime running lights - as shown
- implement the change and use security code 31347 when prompted
- exit OBD11 software and cycle ignition switch

Thanks! Yes you are right, once that warranty expires, you’re in your own in the US unless there is a formal RECALL, but I don’t have any active open recalls on my car.
I will admit however, based on the number of people who have had this issue at this mileage (or there abouts) I’m definitely going to ask, worst case scenario I’m right back where I started!
But thank you for this option, this will make DRL active via low beam setting I think.
Or will it make my LOW BEAM THE DRL? Turning off the WHOLE LIGHT BAR (top and bottom. It’s shaped like a long D or C when facing the car, that’s what I meant)
But if this will turn the tubes off completely and make the low beam the DRL I am all about that!

seadwellermike : hmm........... let's get our terminology correct. As we will both agree, the term DRL means "Daytime Running Light". This is a lighting function rather than an actual lamp on the headlight fittings. So, the lamps that you call the DRLs on this car normally operate multiple lighting functions - like DRL, Parking Light (I think Americans call this "position light"), DRL wink and Single Side Parking Light and others maybe. As I have said, my suggested tweak will "transfer the DRL function (underlined for emphasis) to the low-beam lights (without having to use the low-beam position on the rotary-light-switch)"
However, with my tweak - whatever other lighting functions that are programmed into the "C/D" shaped lamps from the factory will remain. It's not difficult to completely disable these lamps -BUT i deliberately didn't go down this route because I'm concerned about your DoT rules (which as I understand govern the legal lighting requirements for Yankee cars).
Anyhow, ultimately whether this car remains road-legal (or not) in your country is entirely a matter for your decision and the decision accompanies your total accountability. If you want to delete ALL lighting functions in these lamps- do this:
Change Lasttyp to nicht aktiv for these Leuchte-sets
- Leuchte2SL VLB10
- Leuchte3SL VRB21
- Leuchte4TFL LB4
- Leuchte5 TFL RB32

I see what you’re saying now, by completely disabling them it may turn off turn signals and other functions, but by transferring function it will allow the car to do other things it’s supposed to.
Got it, thank you so much!

I’m in the app now, in my car, I do not have central electronics under control units.
I have driver door, sound system, passenger door, multimedia, left rear door and right rear door.
The map you’ve provided does not exist on my app.

Finally driving the car during the day (I work from home) and no change to the front lighting. It appears as if the car is winking.
Is there a way, to turn off the WHITE LIGHT emitted by the tubes completely without effecting the amber lamps in the same tubes? Clearly they are separate LEDs and the amber only illuminates when a turn signal is active etc.
But the white light being out it awful, and the option to spend thousands to repair is not yet possible.
TIA for your help

Will that remove the amber turn signal also? By “all lighting function” I read all, no light emitted at all. And the amber on the top portion of the tube will still be needed and is working fine.
Or by “lamps” are you referring solely to the WHITE LEDs associated with the tubes?
Thanks again, I can tell I’m a pain on your ass but I’m not trying to be, and very much appreciate your help.

So I tried Agaiain, I have gone through the process don, and all that has happened is the addition of the low beam, not a transfer of function (which would imply one turning off for the other to go on). In the US, the obvious lack of symmetry in forward facing lamps is a reason for police to pull someone over (really anything is, but that’s just the BS we deal with) I’m trying to eliminate the WHITE LIGHT EMITTED FROM THESE TUBES ON BOTH SIDES. Not the amber turn signals that light up when signaling, just the white. Is that possible? Or is it only possible to remove *all function* from the LED tubes? If I did that, I’d lose turn signals which is no bueno. I can’t read German sadly, because all the menus are in German but there appear to be MANY options for each LED and subsequently what the tubes show. If I could add an image to this post I’d show you, now I have low beam on in the sunlight, and 1/2 a tube lit in the passenger (right in the US) side, while the left is fully illuminated.

OK, let's reset the conversation - what you are asking is definitely NOT something that Audi ever contemplated for this car. The other complication is that this is an American model vehicle which is designed different to models in other world markets. My problem sitting here on the opposite side of this lonely blue planet is trying to understand what has happened to a car that is in USA. I mean no offense, but specificity is key to this part of our discussion. So a sentence like " all that has happened is the addition of the low beam, not a transfer of function (which would imply one turning off for the other to go on)" doesn't tell me much -other than your expectation wasn't met! First - question: for the DRL function - what specifically did you mean by the blue sentence above (please be precise and describe the specific changed lighting behavior in your explanation)? Second question: When you said "I have gone through the process don" - were you referring to my suggestion to change lasttyp channels in the 4 x Leuchte-sets? If so, please describe specifically what happened to both the Amber/white lighting function (again I need to understand the specific change to the lighting behavior on the actual lamps)
Finally - given my continuing failure to understand this "Yankee" car - I expect that I will need to see a copy of the adaptation channel database for the central electrics module. Please post-up a copy of back-up file for the hex09 module

I cannot post a picture, show me how and I will gladly do it. This is the most basic forum I’ve ever seen, with what appears to be zero functionality past “create post” button, that’s ALL I have below this box, and ZERO option Above. So talk me how, show me how, and I will.
The DRL white lighting on the front of my car (the LED fiber optic tubes AND NOW Low beam bulbs) now illuminate in the daytime with no input from the headlamp switch. The standard setting prior to our discussion was the LED tubes alone, and they have failed. So now I have added low beams with the wonky tubes that are not fully illuminated (just like the image in the very beginning of this posted topic)
The failure I’m trying to program out, is the same as that image in the first post. How much more specific can that be?
There are two LED bars in each headlight housing, one that is completely horizontal on the top of each headlight housing, and one that is vertical coming down from that tube and wrapping under the low and high beam projectors. This lower tube/portion that encircles the interior trim of the headlight housing on the right side of my car has failed.
When doing what you’ve suggested (called a transfer of function) has ADDED THE LOW BEAM BULB TO ILLUMINATE IN ADDITION TO THE TUBES, which in turn is in addition to the failed tube. Meaning, no change to the tubes, and only change to the projector. Meaning the same failure is still evident at all times, and precisely what I’m trying to avoid with assistance from this forum and OBD11 device.
I could not possibly be more specific, I truly do not understand what is not clear here.
These aforementioned tubes (horizontal lines of light above my projector low and high beams, which then go parallel to the grill and underline the PROJECTOR FOR HIGH AND LOW BEAMS, is failed/dimmed. It’s actually shaped like the letter C on one side and the letter D on the other, when facing the vehicle, and lacking the exterior vertical line. If you do not know what tubes of light I am referring to, look at the photo someone else posted above.
I am requesting assistance to either turn the opposing side off to match that of the failed side (so both would them be off) or turn the white light they emit all off, leaving the Amber function that illuminates when the turn signal is activated. Which is evidently a different emitter. (Or the color would not change.
You know what the failure is, you’ve claimed it to be terribly common and claimed it should have support from the manufacturer, who can you not understand I’m asking how to turn them off without losing turn signals.
The fact that this is my tech support is disgusting.

The blue statement in your post says exactly what happened, lights were added to the front, so the failed ones are still there.

Hi there,
So I see the previous conversation didnt end with a conclusion.
I need assistance, I have an Audi A3 8V with a non functioning DRL light on the left side. I want to essentially disable the DRL light but still have the functionality of the turn signal lights. Is this possible?
Below is a scan which was completed not to long ago.

No error yet on Dashboard indicating fault on DRL. I am assuming that the DRL and Turnsignal share the same LED module so it may not be plausible.

Dersen: Hi. Thanks for posting-up a SCAN report!
Alas, this car does NOT use the central electrics module to control the lamps in the headlight fittings. Instead, these lamps are managed by Light Control Modules (LCMs). You can see the left/right side LCMs reported in your SCAN at address 29/39 respectively.
The problem is that OBD11 (and VCDS) cannot access the coding values in LCMs - so, the lighting behavior of the lamps can't be altered via diagnostic devices (I doubt that even the dealer tool ODIS can be used for this purpose).
