I have just converted my 2001 T4 Caravelle from auto to manual. I have a persistent error code 18034 that I believe means that the ECU is failing to find the auto transmission control unit. Is OBDeleven able to recode the ecu to manual transmission?

Have you removed the relay that prevents the car from starting while the car is in drive?

Yes, relay J226 (175) behind centre dash panel. Everything else is fine but cant work out how to change transmission code to manual to stop warning light

Update.
According to VW manual soft coding only includes auto box 00001 and abs 00002 so an auto with abs soft code would be 00003 which my original was. This raised check engine light after removing auto box. In theory my soft code should now be 00002 but ecu will not accept this change.
I tried 00001 which should be auto box with no abs and this works! Check engine light is off and permanent error for missing auto box has gone. Abs is fine, all diagnostics are working, and van drives well.
I suspect problem is between ecu (which is probably auto box specific) and abs controllers. VW manual says re-coding of abs control is not permitted, so hiding it from ecu solves the problem but doesn't affect its operation.

I recently swapped in an 02G AFL 5 speed on my 2003 T4 with a AXK engine. It runs, has ABS light on, throws cam advance/retard codes, codes for missing signal from TCU, throttle response seems like limp mode and it's performance is sluggish. I think I'm going to need to flash the ECU. I'm having no luck finding someone to do that.
Leno, what did you use to soft code 00001? VCDS or OBDeleven?

I use OBD11 good with many things but soft coding seems to give me problems. At moment I'm trying to recode the dashboard insert to correct the speedo reading, got it to work once but still wrong, now won't respond at all just gives error "something went wrong please try again" but then just does nothing. Have contacted OBD11 help but no help! Good luck.
