Hi I have a 2016 uk golf r
Need some help with an issue I’m having had a problem with the headlights I have always had a problem with the left static corner light not working which I traced to a faulty control unit on the underside of the headlight which I now have a replacement
The fault only used to happen when you turned to the left at low speed then over the last month or so as soon as I start the car the fault comes up on the dash for asf fault the yellow triangle is always on on the dash and when the car starts up the headlights always went left right up and down now they don’t
Also have left headlamp power out put stage error logged
So first thing is do you need to code the new Afs control to then basic set
Thanks for any help

So first thing is do you need to code the new Afs control to then basic set Carl: Hi.
NO, the "first thing" is to post-up a complete (meaning unedited) SCAN for this car - so we can see the actual fault details AND so we understand how this car is built (Hopefully if you have "Freeze-frame" data enabled, the SCAN will tell us the long-code values in each module).
If you don't know how to digitize an OBD11 SCAN report - Select History and then do this:

hmm......."no signal" fault? Clearly the headlight Regulation module (it's responsible for cornering lights and headlight range control and it's called J745) has lost communication contact with the left-side power output module (it's called J667). The fault is "static" which means that it's not intermittent. Just based on your SCAN report alone and acknowledging that anything is possible - my initial guess is that this might be a physical problem (i.e. it's not a coding issue). If this was my car, I would start my investigations by confirming that the wiring loom and the connector pins on J667 are in good condition and that the connector is seated properly in its socket. Here's the location of J667 (on the rear of the left-side headlight):

Hi don
I have looked at the wiring as best I can tested some with a multi meter on the control unit with the issue I have tested the 4 larger wires 2 which supply the bulb and 2 which come from the headlight main connector and all these have continuity
My question is what part of the headlight is the output stage checking ?

My question is what part of the headlight is the output stage checking ? Carl: very good question!! I really don't know the answer because the wiring diagram doesn't show the internal arrangement inside the headlight. See below. The "4 larger wires 2 which supply the bulb" are shown in my diagram (note the labels +P1/-P1 and +P2/-P2)
As you can see, there are 2 x primary modules that control the headlights; - J745 = 55 Headlight Regulation
- J519 = 09 Central Electrics
From your SCAN report, 09 central electrics has no errors - so I assume that the wiring loom between J519 and MX1 is OK Again from your SCAN, the problem appears to be between J745 and J667 - I think Given your confirmation that the wiring loom (and connectors?) between J745 and J667 looks OK, maybe try re-calibrating the headlights -like this:
This is a 2 x part procedure - both must be completed
Important: Make sure the car is fully settled on its suspension and that the vehicle is on level ground
Procedure 1
- Select hex 55 - Headlight Regulation module
- Select Basic Settings
- Select Basic headlamp setting and start the procedure
- This is where you would adjust the headlights using their manual adjusting screws as referenced against a suitable aiming target - but in your case go to the next step
- Wait a period of time (suggest 10 seconds)- then stop the procedure
Procedure 2 (still in Basic Settings)
- Select Acknowledge basic setting and start the procedure
- The reference settings from Procedure 1 above should now be "recorded" in the module
- Wait a period of time (suggest 3 seconds)- then stop the procedure
- Back-out of the module, clear any error codes and exit OBD11 software (don't forget to disconnect the OBD11 dongle)

Hi Don and Carl,
I read through this thread and it seems that im having the exact same issue and fault. Till now im still looking for a solution. Initially, I bought a brand new afs module,J667 for my left headlight. However, fault did not clear.Secondly, I even try swapping headlight from another mk7 with xenon headlight. But still no luck.
Inspect the cable harness but i dont see any obvious damage that may have cause the absent of signal to just the left afs control module.
On the latest post, was advise to follow the 2 step procedure, basic setting at headlight regulation module. For my case i can't even perform a basic setting due to some marginal error.
Carl:
Did you manage to rectify this issue?

syafiqfox: Hi. As I have said, the wiring diagrams aren't useful in explaining how J667 operates. All that I can suggest is that you grab a multi-meter and check the voltages on the P1+/P1- and P2+/P2- wires on the right-side lamp (which I assume does work properly) with low-beam/high-beam activated, Then compare the results with the corresponding wires on the left-side lamp. Maybe the compare test will identify a broken wire, or a faulty module - perhaps? Don

Thank for the response. I will try your suggestion for broken wire.
Juat curious, can module J745 be partially defective that can cause only left headlight to not work and not affecting the other side?
I wanted to try replacing the mentioned module. However, it hard to get a used one and brand new are costly.

syafiqfox : Yes indeed!! Although J745 operates the low-beam/high-beam lamps in unison, the physical control mechanism is car-side dependent. In my wiring diagram above, I've shown the arrangement for the left-side of the car only. There is a duplicate (almost identical) arrangement for the right-side headlight fitting that works independently of the other side,
J745 doesn't shut-down lighting for both car sides if only one side is faulty - for safety reasons (one-side lighting is better than none!! ) Don

"Apologise for the many queries" - no need to apologize; questions are the fuel that drives forums! This would be a very boring place indeed without queries like those in your post!!
So, about your hex55 module (RHD car? - are you from UK?) - there is no discrepancy between the physical label on your module (your first picture) and OBD11's report about the module (your second picture).
There are 2 x important identifiers when referring to a VW module; - PN=Part (Hardware) Number
- There is a further identifier called Hardware Version - H07 on your module
- SW=SoftWare Number
- There is a further identifier called Software Version -0090 on your module
On the physical label in your first picture, the large text 7P6 907 357 D is the SW and the small text 7P6 907 357 A is the PN. These values are confirmed exactly in your screenshot, albeit OBD11 reports the latter number first and it removes spaces
Don PS: not sure if you are aware, but physically unplugging J745 normally results in a loss of initialization variables in the module. This loss is NOT fatal- but expect to undertake the Basic Setting procedure when you re-fit the module

Im from Singapore.
Noted and thanks for opening up my eyes to see the bigger picture. I been focusing on just the hardware number but not the rest of the information.
I keep in mind when unplugging the J745

Hi Don, You suggested to check the voltages on the P1+/P1- and P2+/P2- wires on the right-side lamp. I suppose you mean the 14pin headlight socket,T14 of; -pin 1 & 2 (for P1+/P1-) and; -pin 3 & 4 for (for P2+/P2-). If the socket im refering too is correct, then i dont see any connection at pin 3 on both headlight. Photo below is taken at the right side of the headlight connector; Update: i check the voltage at all the pins for both headlight sockets as per photo above. The reading tallies with each other which means not a wiring issues. Could the J745 will still be the cause for this fault?

hmm...... one of the many deficiencies (IMO, of course) with how the OBD11 scan reports the modules on this car is that it doesn't identify details of "subsystems".
My previous wiring diagram was applicable for OP's car, but it is clearly not relevant for the particular version HID on your car. Your set-up has a different "PR" number (and therefore it has a different wiring arrangement). I'm guessing the PR for your headlights is A9R see wiring diagram below (notice pin#3 on the headlight connector is not shown - so blank like your picture). So, my apology if you already know this stuff - but notice that the headlight connector for MX1 has 3 x sets of alpha/number for each pin. Here's an example for the yellow/black wire (which is pertinent for this case): T14 /6 56b
T14 means that the connector has a total of 14 x pins /6 means the wire is terminated on pin #6 56b refers to numbers that are determined in DIN 72552. This is a DIN standard for labeling the electric terminals in automotive wiring. I have provided the meanings of the DIN numbers in my wiring diagram.
56b is the signal to turn-ON the low-beam lights - which is generated by J519 on this version HID fitting. J519 is the module that OBD11 calls central electric module. Since your SCAN doesn't report an error on this module, I suspect that the pin#6 wire is OK.
Again, on this version HID fitting - J745 ONLY provides CAN messages to the headlights - there are NO other wires connecting J745 and MX1. The wiring diagram for MX2 (which is the right-side headlight) shows the same 2 x wires from J745 which are terminated on the same pin#s on the headlight connector.
Why am I telling you this - I can hear you thinking? Well........ the reason for my explanation above is an attempt to dissuade you from the hypothesis that the errors on your scan suggest a fault in J745.
Since the same 2 x wires are connected to both MX1 and MX2 (these are CAN message wires) and since these are the ONLY wires that connect J745 and the headlight-fittings AND given that the right-side fitting is working OK - it's highly unlikely that J745 is faulty (IMO, of course).
With the caveat that forums like this are an abysmal medium for making remote diagnostic judgements - the more probable reason for these faults is either a loss of the initialization variables in the headlight module (i.e. Basic Setting), or an internal module fault, or internal wiring/connector failure - again, IMO!
I end with a personal diagnostic philosophy that I have used for many years - it has stood me in good stead! It's called "Occam's Razor" (look it up)

Update: what the! All of the sudden the left headlight ranfomly decide to start functioning again (quickly did the basic setting and and acknoweldge). After almost 2 weeks! of troubleshooting, time wasted, unnecessary spending of money for replacement parts. Im so confused whether to feel relief or worried right now. Actually what i really did. I remove the headlight socket and just shoved all the pins holes out of frustration with some random paper clips. Either the pins are corrded and the abrasive manner exposed some contact. Or probably the pin head was slightly deformed. The shoving could have shaped the pins to contact firmly with the other terminal. I really hope it stays that way.Up till now its still function normally.
