The code for Golf/Leon and A3 is below Hill Hold Assist Duration Select Control unit 03 (Brakes) Adaptation Select Berganfahrassistent Adjust as you wish. (default: Normal) (OPTIONS I think are Normal, Advance or Time Delay) however the DSG trans can cope very easily with being in gear with breaks on (and not stalling) But a manual box if the clutch was released and breaks were on I presume would stall (and that would not be the desired effect). However what I don't know is does the VAG hill start look at things like Clutch/Engine Torque/Break Detection etc in which case it would be fine. according to en.volkswagen.com/en/innovation-and-technology/technical-glossary/berganfahrassistent.htmlThe hill start assist governs the starting torque when pulling away on an uphill incline and interacts with the hydraulic brake assist and the transmission control to prevent the vehicle from rolling backwards by applying the brakes. This makes controlling the vehicle during hill starts simple and convenient for the driver. So there is no need to worry about the vehicle rolling backwards or the engine stalling. So it seems to imply that it works on a manual as well (so if your car has clutch down hill start works, once you release it then car moves forward Unless somebody else can confirm I guess the only way to find out is to see if you can change it and it works.

Not my car but all auto cars I have had are very happy to have the car in Drive and breaks on (which a manual could not (without software)handle). Granted I have DSG but to me its just a very clever auto box (yes that's an over simplification) and if you check out www.volkswagen.co.uk/technology/parking-and-manoeuvring/auto-hold it does what i expect which is hold it on the hill till you hit the gas pedal. Anybody else know why there would be an issue with applying this change to non dsg auto box.
