My mk8 GTI had an unknown, probably mechanical, engine failure a few days ago. I was driving 75mph~ and I lost power with no smoke in the exhaust or from the hood so I pulled over. The check engine light was on and the car wouldn't start. The engine turns over and tries to start but doesn't. Anyway, I plugged in OBDeleven to see if there were any engine codes but there wasn't. There were codes on other modules that I've seen before, normal stuff like that development code, radio speakers (since I replaced them).
So I had it towed to VW so a technican could look at it. They called me a few hours later and said (paraphrasing) -
"We connected it to the VW Germany, did you use a code reader or anything like that?" - Them
"Yeah, I plugged in one to check if there were codes on the engine but there wasn't, only the normal stuff, radio codes, development codes" - Me
"What do you mean development code" - Them
"There's some development code that always is there and the speaker codes because I installed an amplifier and sometimes it gets upset about missing speakers" - Me
"Ok but did you erase any codes, there's engine frame data missing, when it detects a problem all of that is saved" - Them
"No, I didn't" - Me
The development code is on central electronics I think and it's been there since I got the car, clearing it just causes it to come back I think. Would unplugging OBDeleven without closing the app, being on a module, or any other situation clear codes without asking? I'm getting grilled by them and everything looks suspicious. Of course since it's a GTI, manual, and has visual modifications I'm on an uphill battle to prove I didn't do anything.

Reading and writing codes is safe, as long as you are not disconnecting the dongle (or losing communication) while you are actively writing something. Even then some internal checks inside each control module should detect that something went wrong and discard the data.
One clip apps, incorporating several steps might get stuck in the middle, but still this should not get down to the level we are seeing here, since every step is either done and revertable or not accepted.
I am thinking they are suggesting that there are entries in the SFD-History of the car. The mentioned dialog looks like the workshop has no deeper idea of the bus communications and what happenend and also the Wolfsburg engineer did not brief them properly for this type of dialog.

Sorry for the late reply. They didn't give me any additional information, I also didn't ask because I was getting worried that by showing I know more than the average customer it makes me more suspicious.
