Hi guys,
A friend of mine owns a golf 8. Apperently the cruise control isnt activated but the buttons are on the wheel. Is it possible to activate it without retrofitting parts?

According to the UK website every model of the Golf has cruise control
The Life, Style, R Line , GTE, GTI, R, etc
Maybe he didn't turn it on? The "set" and other buttons don't work until you turn it on via the top right button, it has an analog gauge with a "off" in front of it.

Speaking for Germany, only the Golf "Golf" was avaliable with GRA (Geschwindigkeitsregelanlage -> Tempomat -> Cruise Control) (PR-Code 8T6) Life and all other is either ACC (PR-Code 8T8) from factory or FoD (or "better luck next time, you have the keys but we do not want to enable them, even if you want to pay for it). Speedlimiter (3V7) is free afaik.
The feeling-lucky-approach is to just enable Cruise Control Mode in the ACC - but I would assume that is thought a little to short.
This only works with the "classic" layout in multi function wheel. Having the "distance" key is not working for GRA in Gateway GRA has a Swap-Code 0x10000100 is needed for GRA to work Codings: Motor: Byte 5 Bit 5 Enable (Copied from MQB, handle with care) Dash: Display_longitudinal_coordinator -> Enable Cruise Control
