Hi,
The US MK8 GTI S and SE do not come with a rear climate controls, also known as "3 zone". It is available for the Autobahn edition. The control interface is a part that can be purchased separately as it was used for many cars. Assuming the wiring harness is there, could you add that into the infotainment system?

Sorry to inform you of three things: *There is no 2 zone climate in the Golf 8. While there are two controls in the front, both will change the same and only interior temperature. *1 zone Golfs are not having the necessary equipment to be an easy upgrade, as a lot of flaps, sensors and likely the 2nd heat exchanger are missing *There is no wiring to the back. All German made VWs are having individually tailored cabling with no spares or extras.

You're right it's probably not worth it. $1400 USD maybe $900 if you found used. It would also be tons of work. Here's a complete write up I just made

Awesome work! Thanks for clearifying this. I just went through the wiring documentation and found that there are actors and cables missing for 1-Zone, without actually researching the parts
Funfact is that the ID3 are coming with 2 Zones preinstalled, so there is would be just coding.

I think if you really scrounge for parts you could do this for $500. Many of these parts are available for other older models, like the Jetta.
The problem is I think you need to remove the dash.

Do you know if it's possible to get the workshop manual for the car yet or is that asking too much?

You can create an account at Https://Erwin.volkswagen.de and for around 11USD you can download all manuals and workshop information in pdf to keep. The only thing missing is the parts catalogue, but that should not be an issue for you.

Interesting, I never thought about them geoblocking. Thank you for sharing the link to the NAR portal. But as they are just meeting legislative mandates with the erwin, that makes sense somehow.
