Hi,
I have an A3 but this forum seems more active and an MQB is an MQB for the most part. I posted over there but I've had revelations since that post.
I have an issue where OBD11 and VCDS can no longer read engine codes. When using VCDS/Rosstech, when codes are pulled through the "Generic OBD" button, it pulls a misfire code. My OBD11 previously had no issue reading misfire codes but now it won't. The car still runs great but at idle, I get a random "kick", obviously a misfire.
This has happened on 2 different engines now. Previous engine had scouring and low compression in cyl 2 so I replaced it. The generic scanned picked up a cyl 2 misfire on the new engine also. I am almost certain this is an electrical gremlin within a module at this point.
As you can see in the log I'll put in a reply below, at its worst, i get low or insufficient voltage on multiple modules. At its best, I just get this misfire at idle but I can't pull the engine codes with a proper VAG scanner, only with a generic or through the Generic OBD button on VCDS.
Any thoughts? Does it sound like a failing gateway or ECM? Thanks if you can help!

ryan: Hi. Of course anything is possible and remote diagnostics that relies solely on information in a forum post is highly inaccurate - but if this was my car, I would concentrate on getting the basics fixed (i.e. voltage problem) before dealing with the suspected misfire matter.
But first- try clearing the errors and see what faults re-appear (there are a bunch of DTCs in your scan with low Fault Frequency numbers - meaning that the problem hasn't reappeared in subsequent ignition cycles).
If the new scan is the same - clearly from the multiple "low voltage" DTCs (see readings in the freeze-frame data, 8.2V & 9.7V on hex09 module) - something odd is happening. The obvious question is - how healthy is the battery? If the answer is that the battery is OK - then I would look at the power cables from the battery (especially earthing points). Maybe also check the Live Data options in the Hex19 module (which is the master module for the LIN based alternator) - there's a bunch of battery/power-supply test channels that might be helpful Don

Hi Don, I was hoping you would reply as you are very knowledgeable from what I can see.
I had even more revelations as I dig into this. The low voltage codes all happened during the engine replacement. I am assuming they just let the battery die down and this is not what caused me that issue. Low voltage codes have not come back.
My issue now is VCDS and OBD11 cannot communicate with the ECM by whatever pathway it takes to read the codes. But a generic scanner or the generic OBD button on VCDS program does allow me to read it the codes. In the case, a simple misfire. But this has happened to me on both engines at idle and happens at random frequencies, it runs great other wise. So that is why I suspect it is either the ECM is going bad or whatever module is used to communicate with it. I can read codes off every other module with the exception of the unknown codes that be popped up on my door modules as seen above, as well but I don't know how to "trick" those ones into a fault to verify like I can with the ECM and causing an intentional misfire.
I realize it's impossible to diagnose online but since I just spent about half the cars value in a replacement engine, I'm hoping to solve as much as I can before succumbing to a dealer diagnosis, which I'm aware is likely inevitable lol
Just wondering if perhaps you have heard or read about this in your experience and what the fix may have been. Ie: ECM, Gateway or whatever it may be.

ryan: Not sure I really understand the new state of your scan results but I assume that you have bulk-cleared the errors and the low voltage faults are now gone. Maybe post-up a fresh scan. Apropos of your fears about the "ECM or whatever module is used to communicate with it going bad", again anything is possible - but there doesn't appear to be compelling evidence of this conclusion in your scan above (the "unknown" DTC notwithstanding). For your information in this matter, when you plug-in a scan tool (OBD11, VCDS, or any scan tool) into the car's OBD port - you actually connect directly to the Gateway module which has multiple functions. One of these functions is diagnostics. You can think of the Gateway module as the central controller - in diagnostics mode, it sends a request to each of the other modules on the various CAN buses to report back their equipment details and to provide a full dump of their fault memory contents (if any). This is a sequential communications process (by module address number) which is why in some diagnostic cables (like VCDS) you can see the scan report building-up by module address number (starting with the hex01 module - ECM). So, the diagnostic scan process is simply a series of challenge-response commands by the Gateway module to ALL modules that are registered in the car's "installation list". Each module has a quite sophisticated self diagnostic facility - particularly the newer generation modules that use UDS protocols - like those in your car. I assume that your car has not been tuned and I also assume that in every other respect - the modules on the drive-train CAN bus (i.e. ECM, gearbox, etc) are totally OEM.
I'm not sure why "VCDS and OBD11 cannot communicate with the ECM" (I'm not sure that I understand what this means) - but you might try removing the tick from "aggressive mode" in the auto-scan screen, or try directly accessing the ECM from the "Select Control Module" screen in VCDS.
In respect of the mis-fire, if the count rate is low and if there are no engine performance issues - then I suggest that you simply maintain an active surveillance regime on these errors. As you no doubt know, chasing intermittent faults is a dubious and often futile exercise.
Don
