Saw this thread today on seatcupra.net and thought it worth pointing out the missing information.
1/ No it's not difficult to do the long coding. The long code is passed into readable string by hitting 0-1 Top right. It's the passed ones which saves the sweat but quite a few things are done via the Adaptations menu.
Just to be clear the long coding comes in two seperate screens
0/ is provided with textual information and is provided by the part manufacturer and can also be change according to the ODX File that you have
1/ is a hex byte bit layout and the descriptions you see here are provided by the user community.
in general the Long Coding is used to tell the system what hardware is on the motor, the Adaptations tell the system how this is to be used but as always with VW stuff changes so for example the 09 long coding was dropped and replaced on the Golf 7 etc facelift motors with adaptation.
2/ Basically whether it's VCDS / Ross or Obdeleven they use the flags to program the bytes and bits. The one click apps combine all of this into a macro but you can't see what's happening or what it did. The long string is the machine code that populates the control unit. The screens are a bit like Microsoft's Object orientated programming, the code is behind the click. Nothing to worry about if you are reversing it, unclick it. One click apps on the other hand you don't know what they are doing running a set of commands or whether unwinding correctly.
one click apps are capable of doing long coding and adaption (or both) coding and he is correct in saying you cant see in the HISTORY file the changes but if you take a backup before any changes you make then it it very easy to see what changes the one click app has made.
I dont agree with this change but OBD11 Dev decided not to show the coding changes and they got to many users complaining about changes in the history table that they did not do (because it was the one click app)
Again "Nothing to worry about if you are reversing it, unclick it. " Whilst I agree you can change settings be very careful when coding changes in places like Lights, Brakes or airbags as making changes can then require Basic settings to reset/revert the car to how it was. Please dont just click on buttons and hope as you will see lots of help mails on this and other forums where people have done bad things to there cars.
23/ One click apps on the other hand you don't know what they are doing running a set of commands or whether unwinding correctly. as above if you take a backup before and after its very easy to see what has been done.
