Hi all, new poster here but hoping someone can help!
I'll give some background but will try keep this short as I can. Car is a 2016 A3 2.0t quattro.
I had an oil burning issue for a really long time. Started to get light misfire on idle - not enough to trigger a light though. Had it diagnosed with low compression #2 cyl. I was driving to work a few days later, car basically gave out on me, revs shooting up, erratic behavior, misfires, EPC, blah blah. So I just assumed my engine was finally toast. Parked it, bought a replacement engine and had it installed. Thought all would be well from there. Driving last night, same thing happened as when I thought motor went, went to pull away from a stop and it started reving up and going no where, erratic operation, EPC/CEL, misfires, etc. Pulled over, read codes, reset everything with OBD11 and then off I went again. After getting back home, I took a deeper look at codes. Many modules faulted, all with either insufficient or low voltage code or a couple databus errors. I'll post log in a reply. The engine module had 5-6 "unknown error" codes (aka OBD11 doesn't know.)
So today I used my AccessPort to record min/max values of battery voltage while driving. At one point when pulling away from a hilly stop, it dipped as low as 13.03v and never higher than 14.16 during drive. Averaged 13.8-14.0 though most of my drive while watching it. Battery meters out at 12.3ish when the car is off.
I don't believe this is an alternator issue as the replacement engine was complete and I've experienced the same thing twice on 2 engines/alternators now. Which is that brief shot of low voltage causing havoc among modules.
I just replaced battery last fall too and it seems to be testing basically normal other than the random dips in voltage. Battery was coded as well.
wondering if by chance someone knows if all these modules maybe grounded at same point, perhaps indicating a bad ground? I really don't know. Just hoping to solve this without another shop visit since the car just spent 1+ month at the shop. Thanks if you can help!
