Hi all,
I'm in the process of retrofitting NAR FL Dynamic LED taillights to my pre-FL NAR S3. Unlike the ROW lights (which have independent brake light/turn indicator function), the NAR lights operate in a slightly more complicated way. The dynamic turn signal indicators work the same as on EU lights when they come on with the turn signal, hazards, or unlocking the car. However, when brakes are applied, the indicators come on NOT dynamically (unlike the other 3 cases). Therefore the BCM must adapt the dynamic indicator signal depending on use case (I think).
I've successfully wired the lights in an equivalent way to the FL wiring diagrams ("swapping" a couple pins in the BCM via coding to minimize wiring required), and applied BCM coding from an admap of a FL RS3 with dynamic lights.
**Here is my wiring (highlighted cells are my current mapping, column next to it is FL wiring taken from wiring diagram). Instead of running new wires to B10/21 in the BCM I repurposed C9/C3 which are used in pre-FL but not FL. This minimizes the wiring required while giving equivalent taillight pin -> BCM pin map as on the FL wiring diagram. Taking left side as an example, A60 and C9 functions are swapped via coding, allowing one new wire (pin 6 on inner light, doesn't exist on pre-FL) to tap into pin 5 on the outer light, which now maps to A60, supplying power to the dynamic modules on both inner + outer lights.**
For coding, I copied entirely the admap for the relevant pins from a 2019 RS3 (NAR). However, there is one key difference. This is the channel which supplies power to the dynamic modules (taken from FL admap for pin B10):
I cannot copy this to pin A60 as 'Aktive Blinkfunktion dynamisch links' is not available as one of the options. There is only one somewhat resembling dynamic - 'Aktive Blinkfunktion hat ein auf 1 gesetztes zugeordnetes Bit in pa_dynamisch_blinken'. However setting the value to this while keeping the others same as FL admap results in dynamic indicators not working. Instead of using this configuration I've gone with this one, which I believe supplies power to the modules all the time:
With this setup everything works perfectly, EXCEPT when I step on the brake, the turn signals come on dynamically. Feedback from forums has been to say that in the FL version, 'Aktive Blinkfunktion dynamisch' actually cuts 12V to the dynamic modules when the brake is applied, resulting in the desired behavior. Can someone confirm/refute this? Any ideas on what else I can try to get non-dynamic indicators with the brakes? I'm planning to ask my dealer to update the BCM firmware next time I'm in, maybe that will unlock more features?
All wiring/admaps/coding is in the tabs of this google sheet
Again, using left side as an example,
Pins A60 + A71 get merged to A71 when comparing pre-FL to FL outer lights
Pin C9 maps to A60 for the inner light
(all others - DRL, fog, reverse are equivalent + simple)
Thanks in advance. Would like for this to result in a "simple" DIY for the US-based A3 crowd as FL taillights are becoming more readily available from wreckers and the dynamic lights are a fantastic upgrade!
