I swapped in a LED MK7 GTI overhead dome light unit into my MK7 GLI base that had halogen lights. The swap was simple and the LED reading lights work, but the buttons are still not backlit. Is this something I need to enable? If so, anyone have the coding?

vl3x Hi: I'm intrigued that you use the word "still" in your question ("but the buttons are still not backlit"). It suggests that there was an expectation that changing the lamps to LED would result in the bank of overhead light switches illuminating! Alas -it doesn't work that way!!
The voltage rail that back-lights the myriad of buttons in the cabin is called "Terminal 58" (T58) in car-speak. On ALL MQB platform cars like your mk7 - the bank of overhead light switches is NOT connected to a T58 supply. These switches do have internal LEDs - but they mimic the switch position when the button is activated; they are not designed to "back-light" the switch.
So - unfortunately, it's not possible to code these switch-banks as you want (alas)!

Thanks for the response, but I am confused. I didn't just swap in led lights, I swapped the entire assembly. My MK7 GTI overhead buttons are illuminated when my headlights are switched on. Meaning I can see the button icons at night.
I swapped in a MK7 GTI overhead button panel piece and the buttons aren't illuminated, yet map lights are bright led when turned on (expected, but wanted the button icons to be illuminated as well while headlights are on).

ooops- I apologize, my bad. I'm not sure why I believed that the overhead light switches didn't have a T58 supply.
so, I've just checked the wiring diagram for an RoW mk7- T58 is connected to pin #1 on the OEM switch bank. I don't have a wiring diagram for your particular car - but on my material, the T58 wire is colored red/blue.
If your new "overhead dome light unit" is OEM, I suggest that you grab a multi-meter, turn-on the low-beam lights and measure the voltage on this pin.
