Hi there, since I didn't find any VW Tuareg subforum, I will post in General and hope its fine (it has RNS 850 navigation system (some people also say its MMI 3G+)
I was wondering if its possible to connect to ODBEleven when the car is in standby mode (dash lights, radio on, but engine is not running), as you can see in this video: I can initialy connect only when the engine is running, but once I am connected I can turn off the engine and stil code the car (at least the modules like 5F (Infotainment) and 56 (radio) even when the engine is not running
So I was wondering if its possible to do the initial connection when the car is in standby, because its realy anoying if you have your car in a garage, to need to start the engine in your garage and poluting all the air in your garage with the vehicle exhaust fumes which are not healthy
Thanks for Anwsering and Best Regards

@veso: Hi. I'm not sure what I'm looking at in your video (interesting language) - but I hardly ever have the engine running when I connect to the OBD11 dongle.
Again, not sure what you mean by "standby", but it's quite OK for most tasks to have the car's ignition key in the first lock position- which is generally known as "ignition-ON, engine-OFF". Is this what you mean by "standby"?

Hi there, yea this is what I mean: "ignition-ON, engine-OFF" (in this particular Tuareg (2016 R-Line) this looks like its done by inserting the key in the hole (normally you dont need to insert the key amywhere you just press Start/Stop button to start the engine) but even in this Egnition On, engine off state, Obd11 doesnt connect What I dont understand is why I can code modules 5F, 56 fine while the car if off, but if I am already connected to ObdEleven, I cant connect if the car is off or Egnition On engine Off Sorry for the video haha, the language I was blabing in should be english but it would be better if I kept my mouth shut and just described what I was doing in the description (at 01:13 I am trying to connect to Obd11 while the car if off, then realize that the engine should be on, so I start the car and then I am able to connect, then I get anoyed by the engine running so I turn it off, and then I do my buisness (will post a separate post about that) with OBD11) Will record a different video but as the car is in the garage right now, and I cannot start the engine, I cannot play with obd11 so this video is the onlything I have right now

veso266 : hmm........ my apology, but I'm still a bit confused.
Maybe if I can explain the technical requirements, stuff might become clearer. Normally on a modern car with a CAN based communication system, the modules go into a kind of sleep state when the the ignition is off. It doesn't matter whether the car uses a physical key, or if the car has KESSY (which is the system on your car where a push button is used instead of a key lock)- they both operate the ignition switch in the same way.
The reason why the CAN modules are put into a "hibernate" state when the ignition switch is OFF is to reduce battery drain - since the car's alternator is not operating to replenish lost electrical energy when the ignition switch is OFF. In technical speak, there are 2 x primary forms of battery voltages that are involved in this process; they are called "Terminal 30 (T30)" and "Terminal 15 (T15)" and these are defined like this: - Terminal 30 = Permanent +12 Volts regardless of ignition switch status
- Terminal 15 = switched +12Volts = 0 Volts when ignition switch OFF and +12 Volts both when ignition is turned ON and when Engine is running
So use OBD11, the car's CAN bus must be woken-up so that the dongle can communicate with the various modules. To wake-up the car's CAN bus, a T15 voltage must be present. This means that the car's ignition must be in the ON state (either with, or without the engine running)
Hope this makes sense!

Thank you very much for your anwser it made things clear now, so I guess my next step is to figure out how to put ignition in ON state without starting the engine I guess but first I have to figure out how to unlock the car and get to my OBDEleven (because this morning the car refused to unlock with the key, the onlything that opens is the trunk but I guess this is a question for Club tuareg forum

You have an automatic gearbox. Start the car WITHOUT your foot on the brake. The car will be 'ON', but the motor won't be running.
