I need to check for fault every so often and probably make changes every year or so. What do I buy for my android phone? I'm happy to pay for credits but don't want to pay a professional subscription when I am non-mechanic person who occasionally does some car maintenance. My immediate need is to code a new battery but then I may not need to do anything for a year or two after that, how do I proceed please? I have a 2010 Touareg.

Firstly check out under Supported vehicles on the obdeleven.com website and you will see what one click apps there are for you vehicle.
I suspect there is not an app for battery coding therefore you will need to purchase a Pro Licence (for one year only) there after you revert to standard licence.
In your case personally I would purchase the cheaper white dongle as you are not going to need to support BMW (If you do then you need next gen).
You need to check the apps to make sure the stuff you will do in the future is there, you can raise request's for apps to be built but you need to provide the coding.
Hope that helps.
PS Dont forget to use this tool you need a good internet connection on your mobile along with Android version 5 and above.

Thanks, can I long code with the basic version? When it reverts to the standard license can I continue to code or do I need to keep the subscription active. there doesn't seem to be a product or subscription that suits occasional users like me?

No I am afraid you can only code with the Pro or Ultimate License and once that license expires you can no longer code
If you are on the basic package then you only have One Click apps to make changes to your car (and as you get 6 a day it dont take long to build up a supply of these). If the apps are not what you want / need then you need to do the research, find the coding and request a new app, they are normally quite quick in getting these out.
But you are right there is not a good package for occasional user who wants to code afraid it means a yearly subscription or buy a second hand license if you can find one at a sensible price.
