I'm hoping it turns on the headlights automatically when the wipers are on, which is required now in California when it's raining. It would be nice to have the car just do that for me.
Secondary question: Is any of this documented? With most settings in German, and cryptic at that, it sure would be useful...

tim: Hi First question: the setting that automatically activates the lights when the Rain-Light-Humidity(?)-sensor detects the wet stuff can be found in the central electrics module (which lives at address hex09 on the CAN bus estate) To find the software switch - select adaptation - enter Assistance light functions into the search box and select Assistenzfahrlicht bei Regen (which translates to "Assistant driving lights in the rain") - change the value to active. If OBD11 asks for a security code, use 31347
Second Question: Alas no!!

Thanks for replying! I'll try this.
Regarding documentation, how do dealers and other mechanics figure this stuff out? I understand that there are many settings we have fun messing with, but a lot of what we can do is also what they must do, like resetting service status and other system after doing repairs (like resetting the headlights or other modules.) I suppose the dealers have what amounts to our "apps" for some of this, but it seems they must have some way to discover less used settings when working on problem cars. (??)

tim: hmm...... I have mixed feelings about dealers; in my experience, there are some brilliant master-techs and there are also some dullards amongst their lot!
Mostly, dealer techs follow what they call "guided functions" which is a kind-of recipe-book process containing set instructions. VW manufacture these procedures for most every day matters but they also have the ability to seek advice on the more unusual problems. Alas "guided functions" are a propriety resource and they only apply to ODIS (the dealer tool)

It worked! I turned on the rain setting as noted and then experimented with it. I hit the windshield with a garden hose.
I found that, for it to work
- the car has to be running. - the headlight switch has to be set to auto.
- the wipers have to be on - including intermittent.
- the car has to decide it's raining. When this all falls into place the headlights and taillights turn on, as if you'd turned them on yourself. Once they came on, I turned off the wipers, stopped watering the car, and watched. I waited for I think at least a minute. The lights stayed on. I'm not sure if they automatically turn off or how long it takes to do that. I got impatient. Turning them off manually does turn them off and seems to reset the cycle - they don't come back on when the switch is set back to auto.

Assistance light while raining should control if DLA shall work in weather.
EUR cars already come with that feature from factory. You can enable and disable it in the car settings. And yes, the cooldown for this is longer than 60 seconds.

My GTI came with auto headlights/rain wipers and that was enabled from the factory, with the option to disable/enable in the menu. I thought it was a standard Auto light switch with LP thing
