I've been starting to have this annoying feature where the cruise control drops off during driving.
I used to have this previously too but a repair shop switched me a new control arm for cruise control last year and the issue was gone.

Trouble codes: 00888 - Windshield wiper intermittent mode switch Faulty Intermittent These two above codes are always present when I checked after the CCS tripped off. Now that I thought about it, it seems to be the same exact two error codes in the old scan logs before the CCS arm switch. Both have the same engine trouble code and the one in steering column. After the CCS arm was switched, I don't remember seeing these codes for the good part of the year.
Could the new CCS switch be already gone bad in a one year?

You have a wiring problem that needs to be fixed. This wouldn't be a coding issue. I suspect the steering wheel control module behind the steering wheel (under the steering column is at fault and needs to be replaced.
On another note: If you have a brake pedal switch or clutch pedal switch working intermittently, the cruise control can be disengaged at random too. Your old and new cruise control switch isn't the issue. I have a second-hand one that I bought 3 years ago and use daily without issue.
I'd suggest buying another"1K0953549BC" after checking the wiring. You actually log module 16 and monitor BOTH left and right stalks with a test drive with cruise control enabled. When the fault occurs, you will know what input triggered the disengagement of the cruise control.

I already know the windshield wiper does give weird values when monitored with the "live view" of OBDEleven. The top wiper speed switch keeps jumping between the "stages" and failure. Reading from your comment could it be the windshield wiper switch that kills the CCS too?
On a another note, I've also noticed a following combination:
--------------------------------------------------------------- 16 Steering Column
Software number: 1K0953549BC Software version: 0070 Hardware number: 1K0953549BC * Coding: 0000042
Trouble codes: 00888 - Windshield wiper intermittent mode switch Faulty Intermittent 00895 - CCS/ADR control unit Faulty Intermittent
Could that be a hint for that it's actually the CCS box or the wiring and not the stalks themselves.
Or maybe it's even both.... the CCS box and the windshield wiper stalk.

I'm just seeing your response. The issue can also be a faulty steering wheel control module as well since all these units connect directly to it. I highly doubt it is the physical stalk that is the issue, else it would feel sloppy in the hand. You may have dirty contacts on the inside, but it should be cleaned whenever you move the switch naturally.
You now have an expensive trial and error game of swapping out individual components in sequence, if you don't want to look at a wiring diagram.

While monitoring the right side stalk I noticed it keeps jumping between the stages. Possibly indicating a dirty contacts? While testing out the contacts I switched the switch position tens of times or if not hundreds of times. I've now driven few hundred kilometers more after the "switching" and the cruise control has stayed on more reliably (fails every other trip instead of every trip at the very begining). You now have an expensive trial and error game of swapping out individual components in sequence, if you don't want to look at a wiring diagram. Thanks for the tips, I think this makes sense. Luckily those stalks are that crazy priced.

I also read that the stalks with version number "G" are supposed to be more reliable. Maybe I'll need to look for those.

I do vaguely recall mine being the same revision"G" which I had taken from a MK6 Golf I realize that I didn't document the actual retrofit process
as I had since then retrofitted a MK6 steering wheel and instrument cluster years later.
Also, I'd suggest you monitor the brake pedal switch and the gear selector (neutral) lever in a similar manner (as you know these will disable the cruise control if the contacts are dirty).
I'm happy to know that you've identified the potential source of the problem now

That eBay kit should work. I believe you also need to update your airbag harness wire to be able to plug into that "middle piece" that both buttons connect to, then the airbag harness also connects to the clockspring (Revision-C) such that it is connected to the steering wheel control module. It can then coded as a multifunction steering wheel with 8 buttons.

Just few weeks ago the cruise control started to act again and totally failed. I ordered second hand windshield wiper stalk and the CCS box (the computer box underneath the steering wheel). After switching the parts the issue still remained... After switching the CCS box, the steering assist turned off but luckily it was resolved by doing the steering wheel basic setting as instructed in wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/VW_Golf_(1K)_Steering_Assist. While disassembling the wheel, I noticed the CCS stalk that was replaced earlier in the shop had no labeling at all. Closer inspection showed that the electric contacts inside the stalk only had 2 contacts per slide, where as pictures from internet show 3 contacts per slide for genuine VAG part. I cleaned up the CCS stalk slides and the issue went away. Not a single failure since cleaning the stalk (500 km so far). I'm assuming that it was the dodgy spare part installed that was the culprit all along.

I'm happy to learn that the issue went away (for now). In a few months, you can confirm that the issue is permanently resolved.

That would be useful for others yes, I'll try to remember to drop in a line. So far so good, zero issues in the last 7 days.

Just an updated in case anyone is reading this, the cleaned whisker is still going strong, not a single failure.
