Hi,
I picked up a used 2008 A3 8P. The rear lights are doing something strange.
With the parking lights on...they are at the same intensity as the brake lights...so if I step on the brakes...you can't tell that I am stepping on the brakes unless you look at the third brake light. They work as "normal" with the parking lights off.
With the lights off...the brake lights work as they should...they come on when I step on the brake pedal...but when I turn on the lights...the parking lights are the same brightness as the brake lights. So when I step on the brakes...you cannot tell I applied the brakes. The only way you can tell is that the the upper brake light will come on. I don't think its the brake switch since they work just fine with the lights off.
I'm thinking the previous owner might have done something with the coding of the lights.
Does anyone know where on the OBDeleven I can check to see if the coding has been tampered with?
The car is US spec.
Thanks to anyone that can help.

Before messing with the coding for the lights it might be a possibility that the previous owner has changed the brake lights with wrong bulbs ( with single filament and not dual filament). Worth checking first

I did check the bulbs. Every source says that they are single filament bulbs...and the car has the correct ones.

there is no "code tamper" check unless you are using same account the changes were made with.
Only way is to manually compare code with a similar car(year, model & Package)
Share your backup of Central Electrics 09, so other people can look through it and possibly spot the issue

If the side light bulb is the same as the brake bulb its definitely meant to be a dual filament. P21/5w
**Rephrase- if the side light also lights as the break light **

Best thing to do, I know it's a pain, take the rear light off. Take the bulb out, it should have the part number on it. I think they are a ba15s or ba15d

Wow just had a search myself loads of different bulbs. Confusing..https://www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk/audi-a3-sport-back-2008-2009-58.html this link says a different one too. Maybe trial and error with a few bulbs might help. Also central electronics 9 module has coding for headlight and taillights dimming check if this has been changed. Plug in to your car make a backup of all your control modules and post it on here. Surely someone will be able to spot something. I have a facelift model so not 100%

Lol...well...its been a year...but I got the lights sorted. I went into Long Coding and it turns out that the intensity for the parking lights were set at 99%. I checked and unchecked the boxes till the brightness went to 24%. I had to go into three separate settings...one for each of the three bulbs. My parking lights are no longer at full blast .
