The “direct throttle tweak” using VCDS/OBDEleven. Nearly legendary on the VW forums/FB pages in helping the throttle feel more lively. I’ve been thinking for a while that it’s bogus/placebo and actually is just changing the way the driving profile (read that as “driving mode”) physically changes between settings i.e. normal to sport etc. Well, I have the data to show it now. Firstly, my car is a Golf Sportwagen S and I don’t have the ability to change driving modes in the car beyond sport mode for the DSG. I did change the steering to “dynamic” using OBDEleven which is what you get in “sport” mode on other VAG platforms. I also have an Atlas and it has the all the modes that you can play with so this is from the Atlas but they are all MQB vehicles and these changes go for all of them. With the “driving profile switchover” set to the default “Incremental, controlled over time, you can go to the steering control unit (44) and go to “live data” while the vehicle is on. When you change modes from sport to normal, you see the following change within the live data screen: specified vale and actual value. They change in order; specified value goes from “dynamic” (sport) to “automatic” (normal) followed next by actual value going from “dynamic” to “automatic” – read this as being “incremental”. When you change the “driving profile switchover” to "Direct, controlled over threshold value" and then do the same thing using live data, you get the same change but this time both specified and actual value change at the same time (not one after the other) – read this as being “direct”. That’s really all this is doing…zero to do with your throttle response/map….just a delay in the drive mode settings changing while you are driving and change modes. It makes sense as well just reading the name...."driving profile switchover" in the steering unit...zero impact to the throttle.
TLDR:
The "Throttle pedal response" app you guys have for most of the platforms should be removed. It just changes the time it takes to switch driving modes and has nothing to do with the throttle mapping.
