It would be great if we could access a component by entering the address directly, like you can in VCDS, rather than only via the components on the CAN gateway installation list.
That might sound a little confusing, but let me explain.
I have retrofitted a Composition Media head unit in my 09 Passat. However, I still use the original CAN gateway, because the newer gateway gives me an ELV error (unable to engage steering lock).
The old gateway does not have the 5F address available for installation (not known by the old gateway); however, in VCDS I can enter the 5F address directly, and do appropriate long-coding and adaption.

You can access your retrofitted Multimedia unit 5F via address 37 or 56, when you will add 37 or 56 to your gateway list cu will be black, but you must be able to access it.

You are right that the addresses are there (only navigation is black) however you cannot access long coding of any type, let alone long coding for 5F - OBDeleven simply reports an error "Something went wrong. Try again"

Are you saying that you can't ADD this new module to your list of installed items on the CAN gateway.... ...so that you can access it that way in the future for coding?

Nope, as mentioned, the older gateway does not know about address 5F - this address was introduced after the gateway was manufactured, therefore impossible to add it to the installation list. However, as the address is still a valid address, it can be accessed directly in VCDS by using the direct entry field

^^^Ouch. You may have to end up borrowing a VCDS cable in the interim.

Please try to clear app data and check if after that you will be able to access long coding.
