Hello, after having seen several mechanics who with a diagnostic machine through the obd2 port are able to see beyond the simple table the kilometers that the car really has by looking at each module, my question is, with obdeleven it would be possible to check the mileage of certain modules such as the gearbox or the engine, among others, to be able to check if they are the same as the ones marked by the box or the rest of the modules, as well as see their time, and thus be able to know if that car has been illegally lowered so many kilometers, How do you know if you have had a complete change of engine, change, brakes of any module and those kilometers or time vary with what the car actually has, and thus not fall into a possible scam? Thank you very much and greetings colleagues. dv52 (Australia)

sergi0dj : Hi. Excellent questions - thanks for asking!! I'm really not certain what you mean by "the simple table the kilometers........" and you omit an essential piece of information in your post (i.e. the type/Model/build-year of this car)- but as a general response, it is true that modern vehicles contain many instances of kms traveled throughout the modules connected to the car's CAN network.
Let's start the discussion about your question -but before I commence, I have to apologize for launching into techno-babble. Alas this is necessary because the subject matter is itself technical. I will try to minimize my use of jargon where possible - however, if I confuse you, please ask for clarification (English is my second language - Strine is my first language ) So - again, it depends entirely on the type/Model/build-year of the car in question - but if I use MQB platform vehicles as an example, management of the increasingly complex computer system on modern cars is achieved by sectioning the interconnected network into a number of separate communication "buses". MQB platform cars have six of these "buses", each of which is known as a CAN bus. The topology of these 6 x CAN buses (meaning the very high level way that these buses are connected together) can be visualized as a hub-and-spoke arrangement -in much the same way as in a bicycle wheel. In this arrangement, the module that is at the hub is what OBD11 calls the Gateway module. You can think about this module as the Fat-controller of Thomas the Tank Engine fame in that the Gateway module is the master controller of communications within each of the 6 x CAN buses AND across individual buses.
OK, enuff of the techno-babble! My reason for explaining the stuff above is to emphasize that the responsibilities of each of the many modules in a modern car is very specific and communications between modules is strictly controlled by the Gateway module. In respect of your question, this means that the modules that need to know how far the car has traveled will be restricted in number - likely on your car. This also means that if a module is concerned with kms traveled, it will record this number in its own memory and more important for your question- there can be legitimate reasons why the value of km traveled in an individual module memory is different to other modules that record this number! An obvious example where this variation is legitimate is if the module itself has been replaced after factory delivery. Note however that when this happens, it provides NO information about the possible replacement of the "nuts-and-bolts" equipment. For example, the physical engine in a car can be replaced without replacing the engine module - in this instance, kms traveled in the engine module memory might not change
As to how to find the km-traveled reading in those modules that have a reason to record this number - the reading can be accessed using the Live data facility in OBD11 software. So, do this (again, I repeat - these instructions are for MQB platform cars): - Ignition-ON, engine-OFF - plug in the OBD11 dongle into the car's OBD port
- Fire-up OBD11 software and connect to the dongle
- On the Home screen, select the highlighted button shown below, which will take you to the Control Units screen. This screen contains a pictorial list of the modules that are installed in the car.
- Select one of the control modules. Scroll-down and select Live Data
- In the search box, enter a suitable search-vector like "distance". If the module records km-traveled, the search should return an entry like "Vehicle distance driven" (the actual words may differ across models/make/build year).
- Repeat for another module

hello excellent friend! First of all, thank you very much for helping this post. I am always very grateful to him. Secondly, I will try to answer, clarify point by point as much as possible. First things first, just like you with "Strine" my second language is English and my first language is Spain, I'm Spanish so translating through the google translate app is sometimes a bit complicated, although I check once the text has been translated, but perhaps it is impossible for my level of English to understand everything. That is why I wanted to tell you that the term "the simple table of kilometers..." must have been a bad translation from Spanish to English, in that term I mean exactly, after seeing mechanics that with a simple TABLET, or diagnostic machine which is not obdeleven, they are able to check the actual kilometers and times that some modules have and compare them with those indicated by the odometer, or simply see how many kilometers or time each module shows to check their true vehicle mileage and time status and not give rise to possible scams to reduce kilometers or time and sell you a very very very used car, for a practically new car, the idea was if with obdeleven we could check, like the mechanics, also the real kilometers or the real time that has been installed each important part through your module to avoid being scammed before buying a vehicle, for this reason and in response to one of your questions I do not identify myself with an exact model vehicle, but I mean that it be verified in any type of car, model , supporting that yes, by obdeleven. Regardless of what model of car it is. Reading you, I had not fallen into the case of "the physical engine of a car can be replaced without replacing the engine module - in this case, the kilometers traveled in the memory of the engine module may not change." Quite right, not everything can be checked by OBD2 diagnostics, it would also be important to visually observe each part from a mechanical point of view when buying a used car. But what I mean is that it would be of great help (regardless of the car model as long as it is compatible with obdeleven, I imagine that the way to access it will be if it is not the same, very similar within the obdeleven program) as you say search a reading of km traveled in those modules that have to register this number, or time, since if the car, for example, was created on May 18 and in a module it can be read on August 23, it is very significant to believe that this module has been affected by a problem or accident after its creation and the buyer will not tell you for sure, but you can already be wary of that car. As a distortion in the number of kilometers.

To clarify this post as much as possible, thanking you for your contribution and interest, I think I can summarize that by entering module by module, and then in live data, a series of parameters that the vehicle performs live must be recorded there, and that they should not be deceived, Depending on each vehicle model, they will be registered with a term of different words, but it will be easy to find since it will be related to distance traveled, time, etc. So that when buying second-hand and with my obdeleven application, you are not fooled and can know the real kilometers that that vehicle has and also know, as far as possible, if any part that the control unit registers could be replaced with a new one and not tell the seller. The kilometers or the time that does not coincide with its month of manufacture or its true record of kilometers will be essential to know. Greetings, thank you very much, and perhaps this can also be useful to future colleagues, I thought a post was necessary in which, as far as possible, it is as clear as possible to be able to get this performance out of obdeleven, beyond similar activations.. Hehe . For this reason, the position was created in a general assignment and not within a specific model. Greetings and you are always helping mate! Forever grateful!!!

As the answer is extensive, it was not possible to create all the information sent in the same post and certain errors and distortions appeared. For this reason I was forced to write it in 2 parts.
