kahi : Of course, any modifications to the factory set-up of the airbag arrangement is prone to safety issues and should ONLY be implemented with extreme care! That said and with the caveat that I do NOT recommend changing any part of the car's safety equipment - maybe this might be of interest (both the "VW mk7/7.5" and your A3 8V are built on the same MQB platform): Your project intrigued me - so I did some searching and it appears to be a surprisingly simple task. Here's how the passenger side occupant sensor is wired on a VW mk7/mk7.5: So, as you can see - the passenger sensor (it's called "G554") is a simple 2 x pin device that's terminated on a 3 x pin connector (called "T3" in my diagram).
It appears from my "investigoogling" (nice term- thanks) that the sensor can be easily simulated by connecting a 2.2ohm 1/2 watt 5% tolerance resistor to pins #1 and pin #2 !! Of course, for legal and moral reasons, I'm not suggesting that you do this - I'm just making an observation and sharing the information !! Don
