Last wednesday I wanted to change something on/in my Skoda, but got a notification for an update. I started the update, but even after 30 to 45 (+) minutes it was still "updating", so I gave up. That day I asked in the shoutbox how long it should take, and @testeronline (thanks for answering btw) answered: about 5 min, depending on internet speed. Today I tried again for approx 30 minutes, but it stays in update-mode. My internet speed is well over 100 mbps up and down, so I suspect the dongle is faulty. Any ideas and/or tips?

Sorry, I should have added more info: I use Android 7.1.1 on a Samsung J5 (16) and OBD software version 0.27.0 I can see WiFi activity on the phone as well as the bluetooth symbol, so something is happening apparently. But it does not seem to be the update............. :-(

Hm that's strange. I haven't seen this bug happening on android. Which dongle are you using?

Hi peter036 and thirsty,
I have the same problem. 5 Days ago vw passat wouldn't start after some repairs, so wanted to scan and probably reset some codes. As soon as connection between dongle (nextgen) and app (0.27.0 on lenovo tablet with android 6.0.1) was made, message for dongle update appeared. Confirmed by pressing update. Following message appears:
Device update Do not unplug device from car while updating.(sounds reasonable) Make sure your phone battery is charged at least 15%. (also sounds reasonable) Do not leave car while updating. (i assume this is for not losing contact between device with app and dongle)
Beneath this a light blue line appears with a stretching and shrinking dark blue bar sliding over it from left to right, indicating activity.
After 2 and a half hours of watching this activity, i gave up. Could only stop the app by using ◘ & X. Dongle happily kept pulsating its blue light, even after ignition off and key removed. I removed dongle (didn't want to leave it in the car so obvious).
Next day tried again. At first dongle refused to connect, but after reading the forum i was able to solve that by resetting bluetooth on the tablet and placing the dongle without setting the ignition key to the on position. Again after 2 and a half hours of "blue bar going from left to right" activity, i ended that session.
Today i tried again, this time with a motorola phone with android 8.1.0 (OBDeleven app 0.27.0). Kept it active for over 10 hours. Didn't make any difference.
During all procedures car was connected to a battery loader and used device was connected to a usb loader when needed (15% battery wouldn't have been enough). During all procedures i left the car multiple times. App always picked up where it left, with the sliding blue bar.
I recently did a full backup. It took a long time (about 50 min. i believe) but all the while i could see progression by indication of which module of the total number of modules it was busy with, and also a percentage progression per module. So you can see that it's still active. Pity this dongle update doesn't have anything like that. Could have saved me a lot of time and effort. Also a "remind me later" choice when confronted with a dongle update wouldbe nice, now the only way forward is updating, i tried but could not skip it.
So, car don't start, dongle won't scan coz it wants to update first and that don't work.
Any help would be highly appreciated.

Sorry again, my dongle is a 'nextgen' also. I will look into it more today, and keep you/us posted on results. Edit: I thought that the app possibly caused this, because I stopped "exact location", so I enabled that and tried again, but no luck. thirsty Perhaps this thread should/could be moved to "Android bugs" in a new "0.27.0" topic?

tshuicsks The device update should only take like max 5 minutes. This sounds more like a application bug. peter036 I can't move the whole thread to the bug report section but you can write a little post there: forum.obdeleven.com/thread/9666/27I'll try to do a scan on my car with the nextgen dongle to check if this bug exists for me as well.

thirsty that serial number as marked on the box starts with AC00.... (if that's the one you mean). But: it's up and running again, after uninstalling the app from my phone and installing it again after a cold reboot, it gave me the update message again. I left it running in the car for (I think) over an hour (ignition off), when I looked again is was ready to go...........Me happy! I'll post this in the bug topic too, for what it's worth, it may be helpful for others.

Im going to try peter036's solution right now and let you know the outcome.

Thanks for your feedback. Maybe it has something to do with ACX dongles. I'm going to check this.

After: - uninstall app - reboot - install app (on android 8) - update dongle - , when i checked about 3 hrs after start of update, the update message was gone (half hour earlier it was still there). Device and dongle were not connected, dongle pulsating blue. Tried to connect: Connecting failed. Only after removing and putting back the dongle can the dongle be reconnected. As soon as its connected it starts the update process again, so we are back at the beginning. Am going to try the same on android 6 now.

tshuicsks My app was in Dutch, but I changed that to English in the meantime...........perhaps that too helped? Meaning that when your app-language is not English, maybe that too can be of influence.

Android 6 results:
After: - uninstall app - reboot - install app - update dongle - , when i checked almost 4 hrs after start of update, update message with sliding blue bar was still there. I killed the app and removed the dongle.
Language on the previously used android 8 phone for the app was english. On the android 6 tablet it is dutch. Im going to try to test changing to english tomorrow/soon.

After the following steps on the android 6 tablet: - uninstall app - change overall language settings to english - reboot - install app (becomes active in english) - update dongle - , when i checked almost 45 min. after start of update, update message with sliding blue bar was still there. I killed the app. Dongle blue pulsating light. Restart app, wont connect until after remove and reinstall of the dongle. After connect asks for update. Let that run for about eight min, no change, then killed app and removed dongle. All this with ignition off. Too bad, no luck.

Next try: with an older version of the app, 0.26.1 , on android 8 phone.
1st connect seems ok, no message about updating dongle, scan option appears and i get a warning about turning on the ignition. Scan takes about 10 seconds and then reports that there are no faults in control unit. No modules become visible. Not at all like previous scans. Fast though.
Tried to do another scan. Was only able to start another scan by stopping app and taking out dongle and starting app and putting dongle back in. After connecting and pressing scan the circle around the word - scanning - starts to rotate, indicating activity. This didn't change for about 5 min. (no messages or other signs of activity appeared, unlike previous scans), after that i pressed the red cross to stop. Waited another 5 mins watching the stopping message. Killed app, shut off ignition, removed dongle. Third attempt almost similar to 1st attempt, only difference this time i was ahead of the game and had the ignition already turned on. Outcome similar.
So, to summarize: using this earlier version of the app gets me out of the dongle update loop, but scanning doesn't seem to work anymore.

Just retried for a scan with the 0.26.1 app on android 8 phone. It worked! Never thought I would be happy seeing a fault after a scan, but I am. No messages or activities concerning a dongle update were observed.
Grease monkey time. As soon as the car is up and running again I'll switch back to the latest version of the app and let you know what happens. If any other tests are required, let me know.

Can you try the following with the latest android version (if the update loop is still present):
1) Connect and start dongle update, wait 5-10 min 2) If update is still not done, cancel it 3) Repeat step 1 again 4) If update is still not done after waiting 5-10 min kill app via taskmanager/android settings (force stop) 5) Open app again and try to connect

I performed the requested tests, here are the results:
Management summary: No change to previous situation.
1) Connect and start dongle update, wait 5-10 min Updated app on android 8 phone. Started app to check, is now version 0.27.0. Insert dongle, ignition key to "on" position. Press connect in app. Usual message for dongle update appears. Pressed update. Sliding blue bar appears. Let it run for 35 min.
2) If update is still not done, cancel it Did that by pressing square + X on phone (no other way seemed to work).
3) Repeat step 1 again Started app. Unable to connect. Only after remove and re-insert dongle is connecting possible. After connect immediately goes into dongle update mode (ignition off this time). 4) If update is still not done after waiting 5-10 min kill app via taskmanager/android settings (force stop) Did that after 12 min. The force stop ends the app and the update dongle process. If I press square on the phone however, i still see the OBDeleven app in the list. Tapping it starts the app as if you started it from scratch.
5) Open app again and try to connect. Started app. Unable to connect. Only after remove and re-insert dongle is connecting possible. Immediately goes into dongle update mode. Let that run for about an hour and fifteen min. before I force stopped it.
All in all it seemed like app and dongle behaved like they did before concerning the dongle update process.

@mikeb
After some searching I got my older (0.26.1) version of the OBDeleven app from:
Warning! Use at your own risk. I am not affiliated with this site in any way. I do not recommend it in any way. If you use it you do so at your own risk and you might damage the usability of your (android) device.
The phone I did install this app on is stock and updated to its latest (security) version, bootloader unlocked (not yet rooted), and I was planning to install an android 10 rom on it. Meaning if anything were to happen, it didn't matter much. If you plan on doing this on your daily driver phone/tablet, you better know what you are doing.
Having said that, all I noticed was it installed an aptoide app first, with that i was able to download and install the earlier version of the OBDeleven app, after that I deleted the aptoide app. Whatever unwanted stuff is left, it will be gone after install of the new bootloader and rom. I used a throwaway google account on the phone.
So in my case it was all low risk. Everybody else: see the warning above.

Greetings community,
Four days ago I officially become owner of OBDeleven nextgen device. Till now I am so disappointed with it, very expensive device which is dysfunctional and android application is full of bugs as I can see now (shame in me I didn't found this forum before buying one. I watched couple of youtube videos (obviously sponsored) in which this device was represented as user-friendly and easy to work with (even for inexperienced users).
Forgive me for introduction like this but I had to ease my soul I am very disappointed. Now lets get to the point of the problem.
After unpacking and reading instructions I went to my car to test device. To my great surprise I couldn't connect device via my phone samsung galaxy j5 (2016 android software 7.1.1.). I have done everything according instruction: 1. I have downloaded app via obdeleven site site (link to google play) 2. I have created account 3. I have secured great wifi connection 4. I inserted obdeleven into obd2 port (red light turned on and flashed constantly) 5. I have turned ignition on 6. I have clicked devices in app and clicked + icon (to add bluetooth device) it found obdeleven2 and I clicked on it 7. I CLICKED ON CONNECT -app asked me to turn bluetooth on -app asked me to allow obd access to my phone folders - app asked me to allow location I ALLOWED ALL OF THIS.
8. Connecting went in loop and it stayed in loop. After that message pops up "couldn't connect". 9. I tryed to google this problem and to clear cache memory of app/disabled-enabled bluetooth/turn on-off my phone. Nothing helped.
I have sent email to support in which I described all these steps I made as prescribed in instructions. Next day I got short mail from support to try again because they were doing something on servers. Ok lets do it again I said maybe picked bad moment after all.
Yesterday I tryed again, but eventually without much success.
This time it happened exactly as fellow members described above. After done everything according instructions (inserted dongle, turned ignition on, opened app, signed in, pressed connect, bla bla bla) device went turned it blue light (as I read here that means bluetooth get active). I got pop up message in app "UPDATE DEVICE" only option to choose as said in earlier posts was "UPDATE". I clicked "UPDATE" and message stated that I should not leave car or disconnect dongle before update is finished. I waited in car for 2 hours (as a f..ing CLOWN) and made screenshots for proof of that on my android phone (ONE AFTER half hour after clicked UPDATE BUTTON and second after approx. 2 hours of starting update). It never finished update even I waited for 2 hours (following instructions I thought if I open doors or do something against i structions I would finish with bricked device). After more than 2 hours of waiting (yes I know you are loughing I felt like a CLOWN belive me) I killed app in task manager, ignition turned off, obd11 removed.
After that I searched for this problem and eventually found this thread. Tryed all these instructions posted here (except using older version of app) but nothing helped. This is really disappointing I was really happy to order this device and to get it. Now I feel like I threw money in air and bought myself headache.
I hope someone will solve this.

@testeronline
First of all thank you for your reply, time and willing to help me.
Obviously you didn't read my post where I already stated all these information (except information about car), but ok I repeat again for you:
1. OBDELEVEN NEXTGEN DEVICE (SECOND GENERATION DEVICE NEWER DEVICE NOT THE WHITE ONE) 2. Phone: J5 Samsung production year 2016 operating system android 7.1.1. (Last available operating system for this phone) 3. Car ŠKODA OCTAVIA first generation year of production 2007. 4. OBDELEVEN App version 0.28.0.
I don't want to post where I am from on forum that information is irrelevant for you and for anyone else. VOLTAS manufacturer of this device clearly stated that you can use these devices whereever you are.
Thank you in advance to anyone who help me.

Thanks, location I was only interested in as the US and Asia cars have different setups and can be a factor.
There are a number of people who had issues with a firmware upgrade on 28.0 on nextgen but to be fair mainly on IOS. Did you get to that upgrade.
Android operating system is supported as is car so all good there.
Firstly and sorry if its in all of the above threads, if you go to devices section of app delete all dongles
also do a clear cache
try again but just hit the connect button and it will offer you the bluetooth devices in range select the one you mention.
if that don't work delete app and download again

I have good news but neither of your suggestion or our forum companions didn't work for me. I've already tried everything you mentioned, but I gave chance to your suggestions one more time, but nothing same problem happened again. However I thank you for your time and effort to help me.
What worked for me was a simple solution. I borrowed android phone same as mine but lower android software 6.0.1 (Samsung J5 2016 android software 6.0.1), I underline that android software on mine Samsung J5 2016 is 7.1.1.. Solution of this problem is probably in android software. OBDeleven app version 0.28.0 is not compatible with android software version 7.1.1.
Now as I read again OP of our forum companion his phone was same as mine with same android version and exactly the same problem happened to him. I hope they will fix problem for this android version.
TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN SOLUTION FOR THIS PROBLEM IS TO CONNECT OBDeleven DONGLE WITH ANDROID PHONE WHICH DOESN'T HAVE ANDROID VERSION 7.1.1.

For what it's worth, apparently the updating is a bit of a lottery, my problem was solved in a mysterious way (that did not immediately work for others) while my phone was still on 7.1.1 I used the dongle successfully after that, and have updated the app (to 0.28.0) yesterday. I have not had any reason to use it since, but will report back when I do.
