Okej, so I had the yellow engine light come on. I scanned with Obdeleven and it was "Evaporative System Valve Stuck Closed". The car has warranty so I went to the dealer without clearing anything or telling them I knew what was wrong. They started raving about too little fuel and such (never even been down to red yet). Also said that they had cleared the fault but that the light had come on again when the engine started and that they would need to ask the factory about it (? ? ?). When I came home I scanned my car again and the same fault codes were still there (Over 40 of them). And there was no new date or mileage on the Evaporitve one (the only one that would turn on the yellow engine light). So the question is, can the dealer clear just one fault and would it still show up in Obdeleven with the old dates and such even if it was a new one? I find that very unlikely but I have no idea how the VW Odis tool works. My guess is that they did not clear the fault and were just *beep*ing incompetent

OBDeleven can almost even do this, if you go into the control unit where the fault is then you can press a button to clear all the faults just inside that control unit so if it's only 1 fault then you've just cleared a single fault, so yes most likely the dealership can clear single faults.

sealen1 : I'm not sure whether your suspicion about the dealer is correct, but the answer is in your history records. The History facility will contained the DTC details about both scans - look at the Fault Frequency number for the error on both scans (hopefully the fault has this number). The Fault Frequency number is the count of how many times the same error has been registered on a subsequent ignition cycle. Has the number increased in the second scan? - If so (as I suspect is the case), the Dealer's attempt to clear the error has been unsuccessful because the fault was still present. In this case, the date of the fault shown on the second scan should be before your dealer visit
- If the Fault Frequency number is less in the second scan, the dealer did manage to clear the fault and the same error has re-appeared subsequently . In this case, the date of the fault shown on the second scan should be the date of your dealer visit- or after this date

"Malfunction frequency counter" is 1 on both scans. All the information looks exactly the same.
There is a "Unlearning counter: 40".
Does that mean the car will turn off the engine light after 40 successful activations of the valve?

..............and what was the date of the fault in relation to the date of the dealer visit?
No- the unlearning counter is the number of sequential ignition cycles without another instance of the fault reappearing that will automatically self clear the fault

Ok, thanks. Well the dealer was sorta incompetent. It was a hose in the evaporative system that had come loose so it couldn't create vacuum and therefore wasn't able to open the valve. It took them three tries to find and fix it. First time they had no clue as stated above. Then they reseted my cars computer. They cleared most of the faults at least. But the engine light came on again since they apparently didn't have a look at the indicated system. Third time... well it was the charm

First off, I gotta say that this thread is 2 years old - but I'll still do my best to help you out. So, to answer your question: Yes, it is possible for the dealer to clear just one fault code. However, it's strange that they would claim to have cleared it, yet the same fault code still shows up on your Obdeleven scan. As for your suspicion that the dealer was "incompetent," well, that's definitely a possibility. If you're looking for info on shipping your ATV, you might want to check out this atv shipping company.
