What exactly does it mean that a fault code is inactive? When was the fault detected?
I have an inactive fault code regarding the locking mechanism of the fuel cap. However, the fault is still there, i.e. the tank doesn't lock when locking the doors (classic Audi B8 fault, right?). Why is this fault code inactive?

A fault code is sporadic/inactive if it appeared one time and is not present all the time. Most if not all faults are stored until you delete them. So even if the fault only appeared once it is stored in the ECU. Some faults have freeze frames with date, mileage etc but not all in OBDeleven.
If the lock is working i would delete the fault and check if it comes back.

The thing is the lock isn't working but the fault is still shown as inactive.

Maybe it's a bug. Clear the fault and check if it comes back.
