I am in need of replacing the Climatronic control module in my 2003 Passat W8. Per the Bentley manual, once the new (to me, it will be a used unit) is installed, the following must be done: Code Control Module, function 07, then initiate Basic Setting, function 04, with VAG 1551/1552 Scan Tool. What I am wondering is how do I do this with the ODBEleven? I watched the YouTube for Basic Settings found here, but I'm confused as to what this actually did. In the video, the user connects to the car, then selects "Air Conditiioning" and then "Basic Settings". This sounds like just what I need so far. Then a pop-up box comes up for "Enter Channel." Here is where I am confused. In the video, a "1" is entered, and then that's pretty much it. I'm not sure what just happened. For my needs, is this where I would enter "4" for the second part of what I need to do, Basic Setting, function 4? If so, how would I do Code Control Module, function 07? Am I way off base here? Also, are these actions using credits? I haven't purchased the ODBEleven yet, as I'm not sure that it's going to do what I need. If I can do this with the basic or Pro version, I am in for a purchase, that's for sure! Thanks, Dirk

Hi,
First you need to use coding function. Air Conditiioning (08) > Coding ?xxxx: Compressor variant
0 - Intern regulated 1 - Internal regulated with temperature sensor after evaporator 2 - externally controlled via solenoid valve
x?xxxx: Vehicle Description
1 - VW Golf (1J) 2 - VW Passat (3B - bis MJ 1999) 3 - VW New Beetle (1C/9C) 4 - VW Polo (6N) 5 - VW Passat mit L-Klappe (3BG Ab MJ 2000) 6 - VW Lupo (6E/6X) 7 - VW Passat W8 (3B) 8 - VW Golf Cabrio (1E)
xx?xx: Regional version
0 Rest of the World 1 - Japan 2 - USA
xxx?x: Engine Cooling
0 - Without map cooling 1 - with map cooling
xxxx?: equipment variant
0 - with Outside temperature display 1 - Without outside temperature display
Then perform basic settings by going to basic settings channel 0
To use coding and basic settings you will need PRO version.

Thanks for the fast response! Looks like, for the W8, the Air Conditioning (08) > Coding value would be 27210 here in the US.

Ok, so I was able to re-code the Climatronic successfully with value 27210. But when I went to Basic Settings (in the A/C section I assume) and then channel 0 I got a "Negative Response" error. What next?

Did you try basic settings channel 1?

At the moment, I have codes 01271 and 01274, which are Positioning Motor for Temperature Flap and Air Flow Flap Positioning Motor, respectively. Before I cleared the codes, I had codes for all 4 servos that controlled the various flaps in the Climatronic, and it was advised that I replace the Climatronic Control Module, which is what I was trying to do. After putting in the new (to me, it's used) control module, I re-coded it for my W8, then attempted to run the Basic Settings channel 0 and got the error. With the new Climatronic control module, I had codes for all 4 servos and some other codes, which I never looked up as it seemed stupid to put in a Climatronic control module that threw more codes than the one I already had.
Does it matter if I try to run Basic Settings with the engine on? I know the self-diagnostics in the Climatronic are supposed to be run with the car in the on position with the engine not running.
I am new all of this. Would it be bad to run Basic Settings channel 0 on my current Climatronic control unit? What would that actually do? I'm wondering if the error I'm getting with the replacement control module is just because it's a broken part, but I don't want to do anything that might cause me more problems.

Control unit Basic settings
Select 08 (climatic / heater electronics) Basic settings
Group 000
Note: A basic setting is necessary is if the Climatronic control unit replaced or re-encoded and if servomotors have been replaced.
Prerequisite: The fault memory of Climatronic control unit must be empty (except error "basic setting not performed").
So the reasons can be, wrong servomotors, faulty Climatronic control unit or Climatronic control unit doesn't fit your car correctly (part number doesn't mach that must be installed)

As far as I remember on my W8 Climatronic is different from regular Passat. One more thing in RHD climate boxes air recirculation servos are mechanicaly faulty in 95% cases including mine W8 and even mk4 Golf.
